Dark brown discharge early pregnancy

Hi, I’m 4 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I’ve started having some dark brown discharge 3 days ago. For the first two days there was only a little bit of it, but today the amount was much larger over the course of the morning. I’ve had no pain or cramping and the colour is still very dark brown. I’ve read that brown discharge is usually nothing to worry about, but other people also said it progressed to miscarriage.. I know only time will let as I’m still very early on, but I’m quite worried. I tend to get brown discharge before my periods (was told by my GP that it’s old blood), and what I’m experiencing now is very similar in terms of the heaviness/flow (I already had some brown discharge earlier this month for a couple of days then it stopped and I found out I was pregnant). I guess I’m just wondering whether anyone had quite a fair bit of brown discharge early on and everything turned out ok?

Yes- all was fine ☺️

Obviously I’d never like to say yes and then something horrible happen to you but both my pregnancies (one 2.5 year old and currently almost 30wks) I had brownish discharge for a few days and all was fine. No pain or cramping either.

AWafferthinmint · 12/04/2025 21:36

All was fine with me, dr said only to worry if the blood was bright red. Obviously still get checked out though, hope all is well.

I had dark brown spotting from 4 weeks, saw heartbeat at 6 weeks, saw heartbeat again at 8 weeks, went for another reassurance scan at 10 weeks (because the brown spotting continued) and found out I had had a missed miscarriage at 8w6days. Brown spotting can be absolutely nothing or it can be something. I hope it's absolutely nothing for you but if it continues, I'd recommend contacting early pregnancy unit and getting an early reassurance scan.

Some women also spot because low progesterone so if you haven't already, maybe see about getting this tested?

Wishing you all the best x

Both of my MMCs started with brown bleeding. It could go either way though OP and I hope yours is nothing :)

Firsttimemummyworries · 14/04/2025 19:42

Had this with my first pregnancy at 4 weeks then again at 9 weeks. She’s 3 now. Do always get checked out though, I did both times and luckily I was fine. Fingers crossed for you xx

Yup I had it with my first two pregnancies and everything was fine. I was told that it was just the way my body reacted to pregnancy - whatever that meant! 😄

Cati482 · 14/04/2025 23:43

Sadly for me, all three of my miscarriages began with brown discharge. However, I also had brown/pink/red discharge in my two successful pregnancies, so it could potentially go either way.
If the discharge continues you could ask to be scanned at the EPU or have your blood checked for doubling hgc levels. I hope it all works out, OP x

I had brown bleeding with all of my pregnancies-some miscarried and some pregnancies.

Hi, any update on this? Have you been all ok?
im 4weeks 3 days and have had light brown discharge since I found out! My hgc tests are doubling and the doctor said if it’s brown it’s super common and no worries. They also said they don’t routinely give or check progesterone. Just wondered what your outcome was xx

Hi, so far so good! My spotting stopped after around 10 days. There were a couple of days when it was probably heavy enough to fill a pantyliner, on other days there was just a little bit I could see on toilet paper after going to the toilet. Also, on one day the discharge became more like a rusty colour in the morning (which made me panic!). When I called the maternity advice line they said that if there are no clots and you’re not in pain that’s reassuring. I’m just over 7 weeks now and apart from usual pregnancy symptoms I’m not having any other worrying issues. I hope everything goes well for you! Xx
