Hi all
I'm 24 weeks pregnant. At my 20 week scan the lady said position of baby was 'breech'. I am worried now incase this could indicate a c sec.
All sorts going through my mind..
Are c sec safe? ?
?

Yes. Plus your baby will probably move

At 20 weeks your baby is literally doing cartwheels. If they scanned you 15 mins later it would be in another position, and another after that. It's 100% normal and nothing to be worried about.
No mode of birth comes without risk. But yes of course c sections are safe.

There are literally hundreds of C-sections performed in the UK every single day. They're very safe. Also at 20 weeks baby has plenty of space to turn and twist as they please. Plenty of time for them to correct their position. I wouldn't worry until at least 36 weeks.

The position at 24 weeks isn’t relevant.

Agree. Totally irrelevant at 20 weeks.

They can rotate right up to the day of labour. Either way, c sections are just fine, about 40% of babies are born that way these days!

AnxiousLurker · 06/04/2025 07:35

Position isn’t relevant this early on. But please don’t be terrified of a section, you’ll be in very safe hands if it came to it. There is always every chance a mother-to-be will need an emergency one and you’ll add to your mental load if you’re absolutely terrified of it.

I’m a chronic worrier; always said I would do everything I could to avoid a c section out of pure fear of having it done and complications ect. I ended up needing two 🤣 absolutely fine no issues, not even a wound infection in sight for me. They are safe, but they are major surgery, so like any other they carry risks. But so does taking a dose of paracetamol for a headache..

plus at 20 odd weeks baby is in a hundred different positions a day 🤣 you can be breech right up until labour starts and they still might flip. Don’t worry yourself about it.

AnxiousLurker · 06/04/2025 07:50

Also, I had an elective for other reasons but my baby was breech until 36 weeks. I was out one evening and somebody was shining a torch right in my direction. I felt the most almighty stomach flip and I genuinely thought Labour was about to start. Turned out baby moved. 😂
