12 week scan and terrified - any advice welcome

Help ! I have my 12 weeks scan tomorrow and am absolutely terrified. I know a couple of women who have found out about mmc at 12 week scan and have convinced myself it wil happen to me. I'd feel better if I had symptoms but only have achey boobs at night - apart from that I feel totally non-PG I am going to be a blubbering wreck going in for the scan - DP will be mortified ! I feel like it is the biggest exam of my life and I can't do anything to prepare ! What if they don't find anything ?!
Any advice, words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Oh you poor love. I can remember this feeling too. You have to remember that loads of women have next to no symptoms in early pregnancy - if you have been spared the joys of morning sickness consider yourself lucky. Throwing up 5 times a day for months on end is rough, believe me.

Don;t expect to be terribly productive today but try to stay positive. If you have had no bleeding or anything untoward there is nothing to suggest mc. I realise these things can happen silently but please try not to worry too much. There is little you can do until tomorrow so you and your dp should just try and relax and stay positive.

Best of luck x

You've hit the nail on the head there - there is nothing you can do to prepare! I get very stressed as I've had a very unhappy scan in the past, but there really is nothing you can do - being stressed won't hurt your baby but it will make you utterly miserable. And don't worry about the lack of symptoms - my sil is 24 weeks and doesn't look or feel pregnant at all! I meanwhile have spent all 4 of my pregnancies hovvering over the toilet, so there's no logic in it. Good luck for the scan and try to enjoy seeing the baby - the scan will be over all too soon I'm sure ....

MKG · 15/05/2008 12:34

It will be beautiful. At 12 weeks I saw ds2 sucking his thumb and whenever I took a deep breath he would get the hiccups.

Allow yourself a moment to get excited at seeing the pictures of your baby.

mibbes · 15/05/2008 12:57

Thank you so much ladies - I know deep dowm that I should just relax but can't get rid of these nagging doubts. I did have a very small bleed at 6 weeks and have a fear that was my body alerting me to things going wrong - MW said if no pain then not to worry so I didn't get scanned at that point. If there is a heartbeat I will be over the moon and enjoy every second of it !
I know I shouldn't want MS as it can be dreadful but a little but would make me feel like less of a fraud !

mibbles
what you are feeling is entirely normal it is sooooo natural to be anxious about the first scan.

I felt exactly the same when I had my 12 week scans with both my pregnancies and all my friends had the same anxieties too.

Pregnancy can be full of worries like this - but as long as you keep postive you are half way to enjoying the whole pregnancy thing.

((((hugs))))

RIBS · 15/05/2008 13:56

Im sure all will be well, you'll come out of there a different person. It is stressful and uncertain time, i had a couple of bleeds and i was fine but i think it does make you a bit more nervous. Mine was bouncing around like a jumping bean DP was speechless (doesnt happen often!!) Make sure you get plenty of pic's. Good Luck. XX

milkmoustache · 15/05/2008 13:59

I'm sure all will be well, your DP may be the one welling up when your see your baby for the first time, and I'm sure from then on you can start thinking - I really am pregnant! With my first, I still had that nagging feeling of: 'the GP hasn't seen my pregnancy test, I've no symptoms, I could be making the whole thing up!' - the scan was a huge help with this.

Daniya · 15/05/2008 14:22

Mibbes - I felt exactly the same before my 12 week scan and awful the day before, I didn't want to talk, think or listen to anything about pregnancy that day! Whilst MN is great you do hear a lot about MMC and it is worrying but remember the risk of a MMC is only 1%.

I also didn't have many symptoms at 12 weeks, the main one was my breasts but apart from that I felt fine.

All was well at my 12 week scan though and afterwards I felt so relieved, its an amazing experience so once you're there remember to enjoy it!! After my 12 wk scan DH and I took the afternoon off work and spent time together, we even went to a baby shop!

Remember to let us know how it goes (if you want to!)

PS - I also had a thread almost exactly the same as this prior to my 12 week scan and it really helped!

hattyyellow · 15/05/2008 14:34

Aw Mibbes sending you huge hugs. I was exactly the same in my last pregnancy, I was a bit tired but very little morning sickness, boobs felt no different etc. And that turned out to be twins, which should have been double the amount of symptoms!

I was absolutely totally convinced they would tell me I'd imagined the whole thing and I'd be mortified. I was so nervous I thought I was going to be sick before I went in.

But it was all fine, two little beans, one sucking a thumb and one rocking around happily in the other sac! .

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the lack of control thing - you can't do anything about it all and that's so hard. I am going mad this time around too, I think if you're naturally a worrier than you do fret.

Everything xd for you it's just fine and you are back here glowing and happy tomorrow. What time is it at? Will be thinking of you.

mibbes · 15/05/2008 14:40

Oh ladies you have made me feel so much better ! esp that 1% risk of mmc happening Daniya I have been desperate to google about mmc and find out what the chance was but banned myself in case it caused even more anxiety ! I'll still be a blubbering wreck either way but I definitely feel more confident now. Hearing of others with no symptoms and healthy beans is a great help - most of the ladies on my AN thread seem to have some degree of MS - they are a great source of support but you can't help but compare yourself ! OOh the thought of DP getting choked is so sweet ! He is trying to stay calm but I'm sure he is really nervous too but hiding it for my sake. I will definitely be on tomorrow to update you all - thanks again

Hi mibbes! Just wanted to say good luck i havent been able to get on the ante-natal thread as for some reason my phone crashes when i try. Im waiting for the next one so i can catch up! Got my scan next wed and feeling exactly the same by the way!

mum2bx3 · 15/05/2008 14:47

Have no advice, sorry but wanted to wish you all the best for your scan and hope that this time tomorrow you'll be wondering what all the worrying was for.

x

Excitable · 15/05/2008 15:19

Poor you, Mibbes! Here's the advice my Dad gave me before my amnio. My poor blokey Dad who was no help at all through my Mum's pregnancy who had to answer the phone to weepy me when I found out I was high risk.

Just think, if you go and it's good - and the chances really are that it will be - you will know for definite that there's a healthy baby in there and you'll be much more definite about it than you are now. The baby will wave at you and it'll feel all real and you'll be so excited for the rest of the day, even more excited because you'll be relieved too.

We'll all be thinking of you tomorrow. Just remember thousands of women went throught the same thing this year and it was all fine.

QueenyEisGotTheBall · 15/05/2008 15:20

mibbes try and keep a PMA!! lady i was terrified about my first scan with DD as i had already had a MMC and even though i had MS i still flet like i was makin it up!! its perfectly natural to feel scared of the unknown but you WILL be fine and you will be so proud to see your little miblet waving at you on the scan i will be waiting excitedly for your news tomorrow good luck !!

LadyThompson · 15/05/2008 16:07

Hello in particular to Mibbes and Brightshinysun - I have my twelve week scan next Tuesday, and it's my first AND I am old(ish) - 36 - so all a bit worrying really. Wishing you tons of luck and be sure to let us know x x

mibbes · 16/05/2008 12:39

OMG There is a real baby in there ! I was so relieved and quite surprised really ! How on earth can that wee bean be in there when I feel completely normal!
I am only 10+6 - I knew I was less that 12 weeks due to my longer than average cycles. Having said that I know I ov'd on the Tuesday so surely I'd have been 11 weeks Tuesday past ?... I reckon I am a few days further on than they suggest but TBH don't really care - ickle beany is in there and safe and that is all that matters - hurray !
I'll post scan pic on my profile over the weekend - am at work now (as if I'm going to do any !!) so can't scan the pic. DP thinks it looks like a wee hippo ! There were much better angles during the scan but hey ho you can see the shape and the wee stumpy arms and legs ! Am so relieved - thank you so much ladies for all of your support, it is truly much appreciated. xx

Mibbes! That's such good news - I just knew you'd be back all glowy and happy! I'm so pleased for all three of you .

EffiePerine · 16/05/2008 12:41

woohoo Mibbes

LadyThompson · 16/05/2008 12:43

Hooray! Amazing that they can date it so specifically from this scan - I didn't know that, and waiting with bated breath for Tuesday afternoon...

mibbes · 16/05/2008 13:11

LadyThompson wishing you loads of luck for Tuesday - I was worried that the sonographer would take a few minutes to find it and I'd die of nerves but as soon as she put the scan-thingy on my tum she said "well there is somethign inthere and it has a hearbeat" cue quiet tears of relief from me ! so if it makes you feel any better they find it really quickly !

OP posts:
hattyyellow · 16/05/2008 13:14

That's so lovely when sonographers give you reassurance as quickly as possible. Mine was like that at 20 week scan, did a quick scout about and said everything looked fine but obviously they'd have to doublecheck everything. I think she saw how white I was when I walked in!

RIBS · 16/05/2008 13:38

Congrats Mibbles. Really pleased for you. Its amazing to watch. Wish you could get the scanners for home use, much better than TV!!!
Good luck next week LadyThompson.

mum2bx3 · 16/05/2008 15:33

That's great news Mibbles. So pleased for you and look forward to seeing pic on your profile.

Will be thinking of you next week Lady Thompson.

Can you imagine if you could get home scanners! We'd be doing nothing else!!

mibbes · 16/05/2008 15:54

home scanners, now there's an idea for Dragon's Den - you'd sell loads
