20 week scan nerves!

Hi all,

I’m 18 weeks pregnant and have my 20 week scan in just over 2 weeks. I’m not usually an anxious person but I am sooo nervous for this scan.

I think it’s because I know that this is such an in depth scan and they check absolutely everything (which is obviously a good thing) but it does scare me.

Is anybody else in the same position and feeling nervous? Does anybody have 20 week scan experiences that they’re willing to share? I wish time would hurry up!

Hi there!

I'm in the same boat, 18 weeks on Thursday and scan is 3 weeks away 🫠

I know how you feel with the worry, I'm terrified they will find something wrong. You'll be fine though, see it as an exciting chance to see little one!

Sonographer may be quite quiet as they check baby over and it does take a bit of time (in my opinion quite a bit longer than the 12 week scan)

Wishing you all the best 🥰

I'm in a very similar position! I'm 18 weeks, and my scan isn't for over 3 weeks, which feels like ages!!

I'm so, so nervous. I just desperately want everything to be OK, and the not knowing is so stressful.

I've had losses in the past, and to have reached this point feels amazing, but I can't shake the thought that the scan could bring it all crashing down.

I'm just trying to tell myself over and over again that most scans show a healthy baby 💕

I was really nervous as well. I think it is very, very rare to get bad news at these scans though.

Lalaloul · 01/04/2025 19:53

Yep, I’m 20 weeks on Thursday and have my scan on Friday 11th and already feeling stressed.
im high risk and have suffered miscarriages so I definitely have trauma from this.
It’s more likely to be good news than bad news, statistically speaking.
Also if you google stuff you’ll only find scare stories x

zinrlow · 02/04/2025 08:45

Thank you so much everybody for your responses, it seems that there’s a few of us in the same boat!

I think it’s true that I’ve only been coming across the negative experiences online rather than the positives, so staying away from Google is probably my best bet.

Sending you all love and positivity for your upcoming scans 🥰

I hope all of your scans go well! @zinrlowI've just read your update about only ever hearing bad news stories so wanted to let you know that both of my 20 week scans were absolutely fine and they were at ages 36 and 38! All of my friends had their children at similar ages to me and theirs were absolutely fine too - the odds are in your favour!

BePeppyOtter · 14/04/2025 16:07

We’re on a similar timeline, had our 20 week scan today. I’m 34, nearly 35, and I was pretty nervous going in. We had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks last year, and even now at 19 weeks I haven’t felt any movements yet, which had me worried, along with hearing some bad stories.

The scan itself was thorough, they checked the brain, heart, kidneys, bladder, limbs, head and trunk measurements, and the position of the placenta. Took about 15 minutes all in all, even with a very wriggly baby. Feeling a lot more reassured now.

Hope all goes well with your scans too!

zinrlow · 14/04/2025 21:20

@MaltipooMamaaww that’s great to hear, thank you for the reassurance! I think its human nature isn’t it to always read the bad stuff but there are sooo many positive experiences too 😊

@BePeppyOtterawww that’s fantastic news thank you for sharing! Congratulations on your pregnancy and sorry to hear about your previous loss. I bet you felt like a weight was lifted after today’s scan did you?

I had a cervix scan last week and they showed me baby and he’s growing nicely, strong heartbeat etc, but the thought of how thorough this scan is frightens me!

so glad everything went well with you today, I have mine on Wednesday so will update then 🤞🏼

I had bad news at the 20w scan (5% chance of live birth) and still took a healthy baby home so even if they see something it won’t necessarily be the end of the road. Much better to know than not to know.

zinrlow · 14/04/2025 21:35

@Zeitumschaltungoh my gosh that must have been absolutely terrifying! I’m so glad to hear that everything turned out ok for you x

Thank you. It has been a relief and definitely feeling better seeing them so active and still not feeling baby move!

Hope all goes well this week

Andph9 · 14/04/2025 23:32

Yes I've been anxious the whole pregnancy. Now on week 14.5. Wishing you the best. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hi all, just wanted to update the thread. I’ve had my 20 week scan and all looked great. Baby was very cooperative so they managed to check everything, she said that everything looks good. I am so relieved as I have been nervous about this for a while.

Thank you to everybody who commented and helped put my mind at ease, I hope that everything goes well for those who are writing for their scans 🥰

See! There was nothing to worry about!

PurpleTurtleMoose · 17/04/2025 16:27

Congratulations! That's great news!!

I have mine next week and I'm so anxious 😟
