Hi there,

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and since Thursday before last (20th) I've felt like I have mild cystitis.

It then went away for a few days and I felt normal. But then on Monday (24th) i felt like it again and on Tuesday.

I gave a urine sample on Tuesday to the doctors. It came back with slight flag so they sent it away for further testing. Doctor gave my antibiotics but I don't want to take them, he agreed as my symptoms are mild wait a few days and if symptoms get worse then take the antibiotics. 2 days later urine results came back Thursday (27th) as negative.

I'm still unsure if I had a UTI or not as it got flagged to begin with.
I didnt feel like my cystitis was as bad on Thursdays and felt normal again on Friday (28th). But yesterday and today I have the feeling of mild cystitis again!

Hoping someone might have some advice on weather I should just take the antibiotics or not. I really don't want to take them if I don't have a UTI.

Thanks for reading! X

Can you take cranberry supplements or drink cranberry juice? Can be pretty effective for the low level cystitis symptoms

Couple of weeks ago, I had about an hour of what felt like the pressure you get in your lower belly with cystitis. I’ve had a second trimester loss, so immediately phoned up to go and give a urine sample. They took it, checked it and said it was all clear.

The next day, I had to go in just to drop some paper work off and the head midwife I spoke to took another urine sample just in case. It flagged up nitrites, so they gave me antibiotics. Two days later, I got a call to say the culture had come back positive, that the antibiotics they’d provided were fine for the type of UTI found and to come and give another sample the day after I finish them. That sample was clear.

If I hadn’t gone in for that paper work, I’d have been left with a UTI for at least another 4 weeks before my next appointment. I lost my son at 19 weeks last year. No way would I take a chance and not take the antibiotics.

Sometimes it can take a while for the infection to grow. Sometimes it’s not a bad one and fluctuates, as well as the hydration levels of urine affecting things. They might not be able to detect anything one day, and the next there could be something there. They told me my sample when I went in the first day had a white blood cell count of 11, which they wouldn’t be concerned about. My sample the next day had jumped up to 52, but I had no symptoms whatsoever by that point. It’s crazy how these things work during pregnancy.

I was told if I have symptoms I should take the antibiotics even if the sample is negative when the midwife checks. An untreated UTI can cause preterm labour so I would definitely take them x

Could be normal I pee loads or could be symptom of diabetes so might be worth mentioning to midwife

I'd take the antibiotics. I had a dodgy wee sample but when they sent it off it didn't show a uti. But in that time I'd had a weekend of symptoms so I'd already asked for a prescription from the GP who said it doesn't always show up in the samples sent off. Felt so much better after antibiotics. They will knock it on the head!
