Pregnancy with an ovarian cyst, any advice?

My partner and I (35) have been TTC for a couple of months. There was one cycle the pregnancy test was positive but then I got my period. Sad, but I'm taking it as a good sign that I seem to be able to conceive.

I've recently been diagnosed with a 7cm ovarian cyst and have been recommended surgery. Where I am (not UK), it will take a couple of months to schedule and then a couple of months recovery. Not sure whether I should stop TTC until the surgery or just keep trying while I wait for the operation.

If I get pregnant beforehand, the operation will have to be cancelled and I'll go through the pregnancy with the cyst still there.

Has anyone had a pregnancy with a large ovarian cyst? My understanding is that it wouldn't negatively affect the baby, but it might burst and cause severe pain. Has anyone had a cyst that burst, how bad was it?

Basically, I'm wondering if it's worth the risk or just plain stupid to knowingly get pregnant with such a large cyst. I'm quite paranoid that I'm getting older and the 5-6 month waiting for the surgery and recovery might mean I miss my chance for a healthy pregnancy.

Any advice would be welcome!

I cant tell you about pregnancy with a cyst, but I can tell you that a burst cyst is up there with the worst pain I've ever experienced. You can only take very limited painkillers innpregnancy and I wouldn't be risking that if I could avoid it!

Sorry you experienced that! How long did the pain last?

I was pregnant with my first with a 5cm ovarian cyst, it was discovered during a routine scan, monitored for a couple of years and I have no idea if it’s still there or not. That was 14 years ago. It didn’t cause any problems in either of my pregnancies. I went on the mirena after the birth as they said the progesterone was likely to shrink it. Don’t know if it has.

I was pregnant with a cyst the same size as yours and the bigger the baby got the more pressure it put on the cyst/ovary and when I got to 32 weeks I had an ovarian torsion caused by the cyst. It was horrendous, worst pain I’ve ever had. Genuinely thought I was dying. They removed my ovary and managed to stitch me back up with baby safe and then I had her 6 weeks later but it could have been a different outcome. I would wait if I were you. Or speak to the doctors and ask their advice x

I had my son by C section as an ovarian cyst had grown with him. The cyst was the size of a football. I had no pain.
I've recently had a new cyst and it was recently removed along with my remaining ovary. I'm nearly 60 so the gynecologist wanted it out as it was very large. It was causing me major pain.
My DD is in her twenties and has recently had a burst cyst. Very painful. I'd have the surgery and then try for a baby.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I suppose I should err on the side of caution and wait for the surgery. I'm just scared I might end up not being able to have a baby at all.

I had my daughter after having the football cyst removed so there's hope my lovely. Get well first and remember they often give you a small proceedure to cleanse the uterus. A bit like a D and C.
