Low iron results 5 days ago, but I feel it's gone lower.

Hello, midwife called yesterday to say my iron level is low from bloods tests on 21/03 and has prescribed me tablets. I can start these tommorow (29/03) as finally have the prescription.

However, it is now 28/03 so 5 days from the blood tests and I feel so weak, tired and worse. I'm worried my iron has dropped even lower from my bloods 5 days ago.. as it's the weekend i'm just not sure what to do as can't call midwife's and don't think this is a triage issue? Do I just wait out till Monday?

Can you not just pop out and get some over the counter? They’re a couple of quid

Sorry I realised I've worded this wrong. I have my tablets now but guessing they take a while to kick in so my question was more about wether it's dropped lower and I need an infusion . And also to add , I WANT an infusion . Don't want to wait for tablets to kick in I want to be a bit normal again

It won't have dropped in 5 days no, not by any measurable amount that would trigger a change of plan to a transfusion. Do you know what your level is?

Lavenderrose92 · 28/03/2025 20:00

how many weeks pregnant are you?

your iron level wouldn’t have dropped that quickly unless you were bleeding out

FeatherChops · 28/03/2025 20:40

Unless you are anaemic you’d be unlikely to be given a transfusion. Honestly, the tablets turn things around quite quickly - you’d be surprised! Take the maximum dosage that you are able to and you should feel a shift in a week or two

I see thank you, a week or two seems so long haha. I guess if I've felt this way for this long a week or two won't hurt 🙂
