Brown discharge after placenta previa bleed

On Saturday I had one episode of bleeding which I'm pretty sure is due to having placenta previa. I went to mau and was kept in overnight to be monitored. Discharged the following day, since then I've noticed some brown discharge and have been in contact with mau twice, both occasions they have said they aren't too concerned. Has anybody experienced this and how long did it continue? If it's still like this tomorrow/ Friday I'm going to contact them again.

I think after a bleed, brown discharge can be common as it's older blood making it's way out. Did they do some swabs? I agree, call again if it doesn't stop.

I had that and it happened off and on for quite a few days iirc. Brown blood is old blood. You'll need to watch it very carefully though. I'm surprised your hospital aren't concerned. I was only allowed home after my first bleed on condition that I didn't travel (I live within 10 mins drive of the hospital) and had another adult with me 24/7. My consultant had recently lost a patient to a catastrophic bleed. Please make sure you speak to them and get advice, and take it easy physically.

@AliBaliBee1234 They did a speculum examination and could see my cervix was long and closed, think they could see a small area where the bleed had come from. Didn't do any swabs.

@Wheech I think they discharged me cause I hadn't had any further bleeding, they did ask how far away I lived from the hospital, which isn't too far. Definitely going to keep an eye on it and have been taking it easy since then, haven't been going anywhere or driving. I have my husband with me and he works from home and if he has to go anywhere I can always have my mum with me who only lives across the road.
Definitely going to keep an eye on it and if this brown discharge continues I'm definitely going to ring the hospital again.
Whilst I was in hospital they monitored me a few times and couldn't detect any uterine contractions. Babys heart rate, movements they were happy with.

I had placenta previa for a while and a little brown bleeding. They checked my cervix too but also did some swabs for infection. I'd ask if they wouldn't mind checking that just for peace of mind.

Mine totally settled but I wasn't allowed to swim, dtd etc

Rainbowsunshine81 · 27/03/2025 09:40

@AliBaliBee1234 I've been told also not to dtd, no heaving lifting, I think that I might have overdone it a bit too much. Before the bleed we'd been for a private scan and they were moving the probe on my belly to try and get the baby to move his hands from his face, that got me wondering could that of caused it. You think about all the different reasons. The doctor did describe it as a scab that has moved. I didn't think to ask them to do any swabs, would have been good to do whilst doing the speculum, that was horrendous 😵‍💫

It's an awful exam isn't it! Actually now I think about, I was told I had PP AFTER the swabs so they were looking for other reasons probably.

How many weeks are you? Mine moved upwards around 20 weeks

Rainbowsunshine81 · 27/03/2025 10:09

@AliBaliBee1234 I'm used to having smears and that being uncomfortable, but that one was on another level!
I'm 32 + 3 weeks. I had a another scan at the fmu and the placenta had moved I think about 2cm so not enough, I'd pretty much decided on another c section anyway, even if it had moved up enough.

Glad it's not just me who finds them painful. athe joys of being a woman.

Brown blood is old, it's probably the last of the bleed working it's way out but I think your plan to call back if it doesn't stop is sensible. I'd maybe give it another day and just tell them it's making you anxious.

Rainbowsunshine81 · 27/03/2025 12:32

@AliBaliBee1234 So much more uncomfortable than your smear that's for sure.
I'm hoping that's what it is and that's what they said at the maternity assessment unit. Definitely going to keep an eye on it, has been making me feel anxious.

Hugs as I know how scary it is. I also had a big bleed, clots and tonnes of blood, it tapered off over weeks to brown then black discharge or just yucky stuff before stopping after about 5-6 weeks. It's just old blood, it's horrible but at least it's going. Anything different / changes or if you feel very anxious do get some pwpfessuobak support but sometimes it's just nice to know you're not alone. My bleeding was 17 years ago almost to the day! She's 16 now 🥰

Rainbowsunshine81 · 27/03/2025 13:41

@CatsWhiskerz Took me by surprise when I saw it on Saturday. Hopefully it will taper off, but I'm definitely going to call mau if not. It is nice to know I'm not alone ❤️ aw wow that's so lovely 🥰
