Hello im a 34 female from last period would be considered 9-10weeks pregnant i went for a early private scan last week and was told there was no embryo no heart beat but was a sack gestion of 7mm i was transferred over to my local hospital that did another scan the day after to confirm finding.. They found sack and embryo at 2mm and said i was probably early then my date pridicted and was 5-6 weeks pregnant so they wasn't concerned and was ask to come back for another scan 1 week later to see what was going on.. Yesterday i went for the scan again this time i was told embryo doubled in size to 5mm making baby 6week but sounded surprised and said gestion is 8weeks so will have come back because still no heart beat mid wife said it possible maybe to early for heart beat but the other midwife said after i asked is it looking good because baby is growing she said no not looking good because gestation size and baby size are not right and next week when i go they will decide if its viable what are the chance my 5mm embryo will get a heart beat? Any been through something similar? Im preparing for the worst scenario.

Honestly, I have and it did end in miscarriage. I did a lot of research at the time and basically when you can see a clear fetal pole there should be a heartbeat. They are also supposed to grow by 1mm per day. I'm sorry not to sound more hopeful and I'm so sorry you are going through this, the waiting between scans is awful.

AskingForAFriend10 · 20/03/2025 18:41

I am so sorry you are going through this. Happened to me twice. I looked at some stats when this was happening to me and found in research paper (biochemist working for Uni so I can read them) and this is not going to end well.

From the paper: The following indicated a miscarriage at initial scan: - embryo with crown-rump length ≥3 mm without visible heart activity presenting after 70 days’ gestation (87/87 specificity: 100%, 95.8% to 100%).
also - the following were indicative of miscarriage at a repeat scan: initial scan and repeat scan after seven days or more showing an embryo without visible heart activity (103/103 specificity: 100%, 96.5% to 100%).

I am so sorry:(

The waiting is just awful when you just want answers.. Google isn't helping either last week they wasn't concerned this week a younger midwife said could be still early thats why no heart beat and the older midwife was supervised the baby had doubled in size and said well we will have to bring her back for another scan because baby grew im not expecting best news to be fair i had a Blighted Ovum a year and half ago with no embryo but percenter was there just seems i have no luck

I’m sorry none of this sounds good. I had a missed miscarriage. Scanned at 8 weeks embryo measured 6 weeks. Being told no heart beat is devastating.
I followed the mmc with an ectopic pregnancy.

after that I was always scanned early . At 6 weeks there should be a regular heartbeat. At 5+ weeks the embryo quivers. I found seeing an embryo at such early stage of life quite unsetting.

ShazzR · 20/03/2025 18:54

I asked for early scan due to other miscarriages they said no it doesn't work like that i was only referred because i paid for a early private scan and they said no embryo only sack so hospital had no choice but to scan me to confirm but the hospital said the private scan was completely wrong and i was earlier but that didn't make sense from my dates i should be 9-10week but they said 5-6, the week after they said 6weeks this is why i thought id ask because everyone around me is saying im just early but nothing makes sense and i think they are sugar coating things..

@ShazzR So you should be 8 weeks at minimum. Honestly it’s not looking too good unfortunately.

Unfortunately I had this in Nov/dec.
I had a scan at the epu at 7 and a half weeks and was just under 6 weeks but with a heartbeat. I went back two weeks later. I was just over 6 weeks but no heartbeat. These scans were in the rainbow clinic and mostly for reassurance, at this point I was referred to the epu for another scan a week later. Now 10 and a bit weeks, this confirmed the loss of the pregnancy. I had started spotting the night before this scan and passed the pregnancy the next day.

I would say there's good chance your pregnancy is heading in the same direction. I do have some hope for you as I fell pregnant pretty much straight away, I had a scan in Feb and found out I was already 8 weeks, with a lovely heartbeat! I had my dating scan this week and all looks well. I had two losses last year so very relieved to get to the dating scan. I was put on progesterone after the scan

ShazzR · 24/03/2025 17:27

I will find out Wednesday what the outcome will be, but im Guessing this will be my second miscarriage im getting a strange brown mixing with mucus at moment not sure ill make it to the scan in 2days, the days seem to be going so slow... But thank you for the positive i wasn't sure if id try again for a third time if this one doesn't make it.. But after reading i will probably give it one more shot.. I have a 6 year old everyone tells me to be great full i have the one but that doesn't make this any easier and find the comments pretty rude from family to be honest im not getting any younger and my time is running out and iv been wanting my second for so long..

I have a 4 yo too and after the second loss we decided we were happy as a family of 3 but would still like to try for a second. We decided to give ourselves 4 months and if it happens we will be pleased and if it doesn't we be sad but pleased with the family we have.
I think 3 losses would have been my maximum. I tend to get hyperemesis in pregnancy but kindly my body has given me a break with this pregnancy!

Good luck on Wednesday x

Update embryo has stopped growing from the last scan and is now classed as a miscarriage waiting on a doctor to see what steps i take next 😕

I'm sorry to hear your news. Take care of yourself over the coming days.
Remember you don't have make all the decisions today.
With my loss in December I had started spotting the night before the last scan. I discussed the tablets they can prescribe, I decided to give my body a day or two before taking the tablets. They arranged to phone me 2 days later, gave me advice on when to reach out for further medical support and said I could call them at any point if I changed my mind. They phoned me as arranged and I had passed the pregnancy in that time

ShazzR · 26/03/2025 19:38

Iv decided to try and pass naturally, i have a scan booked for next Friday to see if iv passed the pregnancy hoping i pass it by then, iv also been referred to genetics for recurring miscarriage maybe they can shed some light on what's going on... Thank you for your insight and all the best for your current pregnancy 😊 maybe ill post another update with the outcome of everything

I'm so sorry OP. I have been where you are right now and it's truly awful! We did keep trying and we had plenty of setbacks, but we eventually got there - once through IVF and once after a drunken night.....

Honestly, I searched high and low for answers. But ultimately I didn't do anything different the time it worked from the times it didn't. I think a lot of it is down to eggs, and as we get older a higher proportion of them are bad, but there will very likely be enough good ones left at your age. I hope you get answers, but if not you still stand a good chance of having a healthy baby. Hang in there. It's so hard. I really hope it all works out for you soon!

@ShazzR Hope you’re doing OK 💐. Please keep us posted. I’ve also had recurrent miscarriages so I can understand how mentally exhausting it feels to go through it.

ShazzR · 02/04/2025 22:28

Hello i had another scan today to see if it had all come out naturally the scan showed everything was still there hospital have put it down to a failed natural miscarriage and im booked in for monday for a MVA.. Im not sure what to expect and how painful it will be 👀

OP posts:
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 02/04/2025 22:38

Is that where they give you the tablets and pessaries? If so, I had that and whilst there was cramping it wasn't that painful. I was in and out in a few hours. It wasn't a pleasant experience but I wouldn't say it was that much more painful than a natural miscarriage. Ask what the max dose of paracetamol is that you can take beforehand, sometimes they will allow a double dose for this kind of thing.

ShazzR · 02/04/2025 22:42

Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) is a surgical procedure

Im not sure never had it before, iv had tablets the last time this time they are going in to take it out while im awake

OP posts:
emmatcc1 · 02/04/2025 22:44

If your wish is to miscarry naturally go head and decline the MVA. My baby stopped growing at 6 weeks and I starter bleeding at 9weeks and miscarried at 10. This way it might take a while before your body registers the pregnancy is not viable and the bleeding starts. If you want this to be over soon than you best choice is to go to that appointment.

ktl1a · 03/04/2025 04:11

I had an MVA with my MMC, the team were incredibly kind. They used numbing injections so I didn't have any pain during the procedure, it was the best way it could have happened for me really. Afterwards I had minimal bleeding and discomfort so it was just focusing on recovering mentally from the whole situation.
I am currently waiting for a rescan following a scan showing baby is smaller than expected (by nearly 2 weeks) but has a heartbeat, the sonographer said she is 50/50 about whether baby will make it and I am preparing for the worst while hoping for the best... If baby hasn't progressed when I rescan I will be asking for an MVA.

ShazzR · 07/04/2025 15:40

Hello, iv just had my mva about 2 hours ago I wouldn't say its that painful i didn't have the gas and air offered but i never had it in labour either iv got a pretty high pain tolerance.. It just felt like a big contraction, i opted for mva due to going away next week and can't be getting sick or risk infection while im away, got some pretty heavy bleeding but is calming down and just done a pee so hopefully i get to go home soon... But i think i would opted for the tablets again if it happened again as there are a few risk having the mva, they are sending the embro off for genetics so hopefully might get some answers faster... I was taken back when they asked me if i wanted to cremate or take the baby tissue home in a box at only 6-8 weeks i was stomped i decided to cremate and if anything is left they will send it me.. Normal miscarriage you wouldn't see it this early or decide that but i guess its a nice thing to do to offer
