Possible miscarriage

I starting bleeding brown at the weekend (I'm around 5.5 weeks). A scan at the hospital showed 2 gestational sacs and egg yolks and the bleeding stopped. Unfortunately today I have started bleeding red and have very bad stomach cramps. I conceived using DE and my clinic has advised that I up the hormones I am on.

Has anyone had anything similar and not miscarried?

Hi Standgirl,

I am sorry you are having a bad time.

I can't help with your actual experience because it is outside my experience but I have been through infertility myself and know the whole horrible rollercoaster of treatment. (I am not familiar with the terminology DE but it seems to me as though you have been through assisted conception with donated eggs.) I would suggest you ask the following...and I hope the clinic / hospital will support you, they really should. I have had 2 ectopic pregnancies in the past and know how alone you can feel when things don't go according to plan. It will probably help you to know more about what is going on.

These would be my questions.

  1. Could the clinic / hospital re scan you?
  2. What are your levels of BHCG and are they rising roughly every 48 hours. (In a healthy pregnancy hormones should double roughly every 48-72 hours.) yours should be higher because of the two gestational sacs.
  3. Can they test your progestrone levels?

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Thank you. The hospital said there was no point having another scan for 7-10 days as I am in such early stages of pregnancy (now 6 weeks). They didn't offer to do anything else and said if I started bleeding again (I have, and much worse) that I should just wait. My clinic is in Spain - so I can't go there.

I'm just going to have to wait till then but given that the stomach cramps have kicked in again and I haven't stopped bleeding since Monday I'm not too hopeful. It may be that the "best" I can hope for is that only one of the embryos is affected.

Best wishes
SG

Dear Standgirl,

I feel for you in this difficult situation. Hang in there. All you can do is wait. Lots of hugs over cyber space.

Let us know how you do, but of course only if you feel like it. I also hope you have a good outcome.

Lots of love,

Thank you all for your kind messages of support. I will pop back on after my scan on Thursday and let you know the outcome. Things got worse over the weekend though and I ended up in hospital being given morphine for the pain. It did occur to me that it was funny how careful I was about anything going into my body and had given up smoking, drink and a whole range of food but morphine is apparently fine.

Hi Standgirl,

I know about the worry of substances from my own experiences so I am fully with you. To go through all that after assisted conception must be especially difficult. My thoughts are with you.

I have also been told by consultants that a range of drugs are okay in pregnancy if needed. In one hospital I was given a cocktail before they discovered that I had ectopics (I was being checked for it) and I was reasured that they would be unlikely to damage the embryo, should they be in the right place. (I was even given a laparoscopy with a general anaesthetic.)

I hope you have people with you to support you and that you are able to take time off work if possible. Waiting can sometimes be the hardest thing of all and I hope you get a good result on Thursday. Is there anyone who can go with you? I have been so nervous going into the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit that I could barely walk.

Listen, once again lots of luck

And love and hugs.

OK. The scan showed that one of my embryos was miscarried but the other shows a heartbeat. The doctor said the signs are mixed but since Thursday I've had no more bleeding or pain so things may be ok. Will have another scan in two weeks. Wish me luck!

Standgirl,

I was sorry I was occupied for a couple of days and couldn't write. That sounds like good news, although I am sorry you lost an embryo. I wish you all the luck in the world and stay in touch and let me know how it goes.

Lots of love
