Another chemical?

So my period was due Friday. Didn't take a test until today because not that long ago I had a chemical pregnancy (November) and because I have been spotting for over 5 days and it isn't unusual for me to spot before my period. By today, I thought my period would have fully shown. I took a pregnancy test and got a clear BFP straight away (attached) but I'm still spotting. I mean it's the tiniest bit, like you really need to look at it but I'm just thinking I'm having another chemical. The only hope I have is that the test I got when I had the chemical pregnancy was ever so faint even with my first morning pee while I took this one in the middle of the day and with the tiniest amount of pee I could do because I was then desperate to test (TMI, sorry).
I know time will tell I suppose I just wanted to vent and maybe empathise with someone going through something similar?

Do you think the line isn't strong enough for how many DPO you are? Spotting doesn't mean a chemical, what would imply a chemical to me are positive tests that don't darken, or else just get lighter.

I would test again in the morning (or the day after if you can hold off!) and see what the line looks like then. Failing that, book in for blood tests a few days apart.

Fingers crossed for you!

The fact that the line showed straight away and is darkish for a middle of day pee gives me hope. I didn't expect it to be that dark I suppose since I'm two days late and I don't track my cycles rigorously. Unsure if I'll test tomorrow.

Normally I'd expect a much darker line after a missed period but if you weren't physically tracking then it's possible you ovulated later this month.

As for the spotting, that can be normal for a lot of women with lots of different causes (many harmless). The time to worry is if you get any pain or heavy bleeding (especially if bright red)

New test this morning. However I did have more noticeable brown spotting again. I had some slight pains on my left side, which got me worried as I've had an ectopic before as well.

That's quite a bit stronger 🤗

If you've had an ectopic before it's probably good to get in with the doctors now, get blood tests and maybe schedule an ultrasound for a few weeks time.

The time I got pregnant naturally, I had spotting and one sided pains (as well as general cramps) and everything was fine :)

That’s a great strong line! I had spotting around when my period was due with all my pregnancies, it’s just normal for some people. The cramping could be implantation pain too which I had especially with my first.
It’s tough but you just have to try and remain positive now, that test is a really good sign so take each day as it comes.

Update for anyone finding this: I had bloods drawn two days apart (Tuesday and Thursday). They doubled (they also did in my ectopic so I wasn't too relieved yet). Had a scan a few days later (yesterday). We saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac. No heartbeat or fetal pole but I reckon I'm only 5 weeks 5 days from LMP, so quite early. Re-scan in two weeks.

congrats! Everything seems to be on the right path for you lovely! I’ve got a bit of a similar situation but unfortunately I’ve had 3 positive tests then they’ve been negative. Followed by another positive test yesterday. I am very confused! I’m bleeding and have been for about 10 days, some days are just spotting, others a bit heavier. I have also had some pain on my lower left side. Am I miscarrying? Is it a chemical? Or am I being delusional thinking this is very early pregnancy and implantation? Any help would be very appreciated xxx

Arcoiris3101 · 25/03/2025 14:50

It does sound super similar. For me it must have been implantation as they couldn't find the cause for the bleed. The lady who did the scan said sometimes c-sections scars can cause bleeding. Is this your case too? Fingers crossed foe you x

This is my first potential pregnancy ever so all very new for me. Just very confusing and upsetting not knowing what is going on with my body. I can try to attach photos below which will hopefully explain it a bit better. Thankyou for responding xxx
(the first picture is the test I did in the evening and was positive straight away)
(the second picture is a test I did earlier today)
with mostly negative tests in between these tests but some faint positives

When I had my chemical pregnancy the spotting eventually became my period but it was all quite quick. Had a positive test on a Monday and by Saturday I was already negative on test and the bleeding was heavy. Has your bleeding got any worse? In this pregnancy, I was spotting for over 2 weeks and it's only on the last two days that seems to have stopped. They have prescribed me progesterone just in case.

Final update for anyone finding this in the future.
Had a scan 2 weeks after seeing the gestational sac/yolk scan. The baby was measuring 5 weeks 5 days which was impossible (I should have been almost 8 weeks) and had a heart beat of 77bpm (not good). Had a scan a week later. Baby didn't grow, heartbeat even fainter. As I was taking progesterone, they reckoned that it was stopping me from miscarriaging. I shall wait now for it to pass naturally.

Ugh I'm so sorry to hear your update 😔 I hope that everything passes ok, and that things go well for you in future. Sending you lots of love xxx
