Hi I have pcos and have been ttc for 8 years last week I took a test as I had been feeling unwell and had instant dark lines 🙌 I also done a clear blue digital which said 3+. I have felt so happy as I honestly thought this would never happen.
everything has moved so quickly as they are basing it on my last period which was 14 weeks ago. Iv had a dating scan today and they have told me I’m no more then 4 weeks and only a gestational sac and yolk sac can be seen. This was also done on an abdominal scan so not the most accurate at this stage. They had told me I need to wait till 11/14 weeks for further scanning and I’m just so upset that something has happened or is going to happen it’s such a long time to wait and feel worried,Is this normal and has anyone else had similar and it turns out good news after all. If you have reached this far thank you for reading to the end.

Unfortunately there’s just no way to know right now how it will go.

It’s obviously possible you are only 4 weeks (conceived 2 weeks ago) so it’s just far too early. Without knowing your ovulation you cannot say with any certainty how far along you are.

Its also possible you are further along but the pregnancy stopped developing at 4 weeks but your body has not realised yet.

Sadly until you have another scan there’s no way to know which way it will go. Getting a 3+ weeks a week ago would indicate you are further along than 4 weeks. But also an abdominal scan isn’t as accurate as a vaginal scan in the early days so not seeing much could be normal. It’s possible you are only say 5-6 weeks, this stage could get a 3+ on a digital, and maybe they just couldn’t see much due to it being an abdominal scan and again measurements would be more likely to be out.

If it was me, I would either wait 2 weeks and book a private scan, or try and get seen at an EPU. You could obviously just wait until they want to officially rescan you but waiting another 7-10 weeks I personally wouldn’t want to do in case it is bad news. But plenty of people would prefer to wait.

If your period was 14 weeks ago this means you definitely ovulated just recently because if you were 14 but the pregnancy stopped progressing at 4w you would 100% miscarry by now as well as probably get symptoms long ago now. My guess would be you were around 5 weeks when you tested which corresponds with the start of symptoms and due to it being an abdominal ultrasound they dated you back and you’re somewhere around 5.5-6 weeks now. At 4 weeks there probably wouldn’t even be a gestational sac seen with abdominal ultrasound.

Thank you,I agree with around 5.5/6 but would this still be to early to see an embryo? Also I Iam not the smallest of people and on the form he said visibility was difficult due to my size so do u think there was a chance he couldn’t see the embryo even if it was there? I have some light cramping now but no spotting or bleeding at all. I just really hope this pregnancy sticks.

I'm currently pregnant through IVF and the clinic I was treated at don't do the first scan until 7 weeks; any earlier than that, there's a chance it's too small to detect and a heartbeat is unlikely to be visible. They also only do transvaginal at that stage as abdominal is less likely to pick anything up. So if you are anything under 7 weeks pregnant then it's unlikely they'd be able to see anything significant at this time, especially via the abdominal route.

As a PP said, if I were you I'd get a private, transvaginal scan for reassurance. If they've said they estimate you're 4 weeks, maybe wait 3? Wishing you the best of luck.

@Emcait07 yes abdominal scan shows much less this early on that’s why they usually do internal scans at this stage.

Namexchangex · 15/03/2025 07:42

I'd see if you can get a scan at EPU in 2 weeks of not private places do internal dating scans. Hope all is ok

I recently had an early scan at 6+5 weeks and they could barely see anything on my abdominal scan, even though I’m slim. When they did transvaginal, everything was seen. Said it’s cause I have a retroverted uterus.

You could get a transvaginal scan so you know where you are at xx
