Second trimester - Dental treatment and anxiety

Hi all,

Having some anxiety really - I'm 13 weeks pregnant and have had some gum problems for about a 6 weeks. Went to see the dentist and I have a failed root canal at the back with a small self draining abscess (it's not painful thankfully!) but you hear that word and immediately worry about baby.

I'm due to have the tooth removed in three weeks but I'm just worried about the effect on baby. The dentist didn't seem overly concerned and didn't prescribe any antibiotics or anything for the abscess but just wondered if anyone has had similar?

I'm worried about both the abscess at the moment and the tooth extraction and any risks to baby!!

I've had dental/ mouth issues in both pregnancies - it's actually really common and why you get free dental care during pregnancy and for months afterwards.

First pregnancy I eventually had to have a tooth removed around 25 weeks. Everything was absolutely fine with the baby.

Second pregnancy and I've been plagued by mouth sores and ulcers, infections etc. I've been on antibiotics a couple of times and all absolutely fine with baby.

Thanks so much for your reply and sorry you've had dental problems too 😞 glad to know pregnancies went well though. Gosh the anxiety is just ridiculous!

Hi, I'm a dentist and don't worry about having the tooth removed. It is a safe procedure in the 2nd trimester especially. Much better than having a draining abscess in your mouth! It will go well, try not to stress
