Brown discharge/bleeding

Hi all,

I’m 14+5 and going through the mill with this pregnancy. After two losses last year, I found out on Xmas eve that I was pregnant again. At 5/6 weeks, hyperemesis hit for the second time and has floored me. I’m very grateful for the care I received in hospital and I was put on xonvea.

This weekend was my first weekend of feeling I had turned a corner and I enjoyed several long walks in the glorious spring sunshine. I came back yesterday to a lot of brown blood/discharge in my knickers and continued brown discharge when wiping. Maternity triage weren’t interested as I’m not 16 weeks yet and EPU wasn’t open as it was the weekend. They told me to present at A&E if the bleeding picked up or I started cramping.

I knew I needed more reassurance and found a private clinic scanning - baby was OK and the sonographer checked and found no signs of bleeding.

Today the bleeding has continued although it very much is more present when wiping. EPU would like me in tomorrow to check me over.

I’m terrified. I have a friend who started this way in the second trimester and had a loss. I know statistics are in my favour but I just can’t shake the negativity after loss. I’d appreciate a hand hold or others’ experiences. I’d also love to know how people have approached dealing with continued discharge if/when scans say everything is OK.

No bleeding in successful pregnancy with DD.

Pregnancy after loss really is quite scary isn't it! I had an easy first pregnancy with my daughter followed by two mmcs (not one sign anything was wrong, no bleeding etc).

When I fell pregnant again I had brown discharge at 6 weeks (I was convinced on the day I must be having a miscarriage as it was so rare for me to have random bleeding!), 11 weeks, 18 weeks. At some point I also had a brown clot come out. I was seen to have a hematoma at my 6 weeks scan so can only assume it was that but I recall the fear.

That pregnancy went absolutely fine and she's now 9 weeks old. Brown blood is usually a better sign as it's old blood, you aren't actively bleeding at that time and there can be many reasons for it. So yes, you can have a straight forward pregnancy followed by one with some brown bleeding with losses in-between 🥰. I hope you're feeling better on the medication, HG sounds awful xx

@ThelastRolo20 thank you so much for commenting your experience.

At my scan today, they can see a small bleed on the placenta which would account for my brown bleeding. They’ve said that as long as the bleed is brown, just to rest and take it easy. I’m to return if it turns red/clotty or I’m in pain.

I feel relieved to have an answer but worried that there is something else going on in this pregnancy. I really hope things settle soon!

@LovingMamaWifeTeacher ah it's always good to know the reason, definitely rest up if it's a bleed from the placenta, I'm sure it'll sort itself out.

Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy ❤️
