Since it seems to be reasonably common, I thought maybe we could have an ongoing thread where we could discuss issues relating to it, and maybe share ideas of meals that work for us to keep blood sugars down.

I was just over the threshold on my GTT nearly 3 weeks ago, and have been monitoring my bloods 4 times a day since last Thursday. Had my first visit to joint diabetic/obstetric clinic this morning, which I found thoroughly impersonal and demoralising, so am feeling a bit low about it at the moment.

I am nearly 20 weeks, so still have a long way to go. Am hoping to control it just through diet, but consultant gave me a prescription for insulin 'just in case I need it'!

Am having the most problem with my after breakfast reading. Have been told to keep it below 7 one hour after eating, but even with the cereals they have recommended, I am getting around 8-9. Dietician has recommended trying baked beans on toast for breakfast instead. Is anyone else struggling with this one, as they said it is a common one to find raised due to steroids produced by the body in the mornings?

Welcome lovely dizzy!

Will chat lots and answer all the questions I can for you when I'm back from holiday at the weekend, but in the meantime, cut out all sugar and white bread etc.

disney was tested both times previously and was negative - just about hurt myself laughing with they told me to expect a larger than average baby - as opposed to what?!?!?!?

I've had growth scans with all of mine and was due to have another one on Wed but when the witch MW phoned today she insisted it all had to be brought forward due to the results so am in on Tues instead ?!?!?!!

thank you CSWS - hope you have a lovely holiday and it stays dry for you

JacobsPrincess · 24/06/2008 21:26

I found that once they "diagnose" GD, everyone speeds up a bit and it's all rush, rush, rush from the HCP to see you. In my case, waste of time because I've always been borderline. But I can appreciate why they push scans & appointments forward, as some women need insulin fast!

dizzydixies · 24/06/2008 21:28

the laugh was she was stressing how it HAD to be brought forward etc etc and then told me it was only the day before original appt and still a week away

she was fully aware I was booked in on Wed anyway silly mare

CantSleepWontSleep · 30/06/2008 08:43

Thought it was about time I put in an appearance - have been v busy since we got back!

How are you getting on dizzy? Any questions we can help with?

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 30/06/2008 12:40

hi CSWS - have my appt tomorrow morning so am hoping for some advice/direction etc from them tomorrow - I stopped reading up about it as was beginning to get completely confused and freaked out by it all

did you have a nice holiday?

CantSleepWontSleep · 01/07/2008 20:25

How did you get on today dizzy? All set up for blood testing at home?

Holiday was lovely thanks. Dd kept us very busy building sandcastles and swimming, but did her first full length of the pool (with armbands), which we were very proud of .

another farking 3hr hosp visit today (I have wasting time waiting grump grump mumble) scanned again - all fine, big baby no surprise there. off to diabetic clinic where blood pressure etc all checked and all spot on

have been given one of the pen things to monitor blood sugar levels and advice re diet (apparently magnum whites are on the NO list ) and have to go back in a week

levels to be between 4 - 6 and so far today have been 4.3, 6.1 and 5.1 so doing ok I think

am glad you had a lovely holiday though

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/07/2008 07:29

Levels to be between 4 and 6 . When are you supposed to test? I suppose I might get in the 5's if I tested before eating, but almost never afterwards, and it's usual to test an hour after food.

Evening all, I've been awol since my hols (which were lovely tho very English, involving hiding behind a windbreak and eating sarnies at 100 mph before the rain got too heavy....)
Passed my second GTT last week so still count as normal ! Not as well as last time but 5.2 is tippy top in my book.
So I'm hanging around here like a fraud.
disneystar - I can't remember when you're booked in for - is it soon???
CSWS, glad you had good hols
Dixie - welcome!

dizzydixies · 06/07/2008 18:05

CSWS I have to measure before breakfast/lunch/dinner/bed and get it to be between 4 and 6

if thats not right am doing it wrong and I'm sure they'll point it out to me on Tues

thanks Pepperrabbit

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/07/2008 21:43

Ah ok, so you're testing before food rather than after. Unusual to only do it that way (some of the ladies have done a day of 'befores' and then a day of 'afters'), but at least the 4-6 makes sense now .

disney - I'm guessing you have been admitted as you've been absent for a while. Hope that all is going well.

Growth scan for me tomorrow, followed by clinic. Hopefully they won't tell me off too much for my holiday treats!

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 06/07/2008 21:45

will keep fingers crossed for you tomorrow CSWS

our sonographers don't rate growth scans much and seeing as my previous dds were 10lb4 and 11lb1 without GD goodness knows what I'm in for

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/07/2008 21:56

Have they not used the 'maybe you had GD but we didn't pick up on it' line on you yet? They've tried that with me just because dd was 9lbs.

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 06/07/2008 21:59

no not had that one yet but am in on tues so maybe that will come!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2008 18:39

How'd you get on today dizzy?

My scan was fine yesterday - still tracking nicely along 50th centile for everything (marginally below for head circ, which is fine by me!), and it looks like my low placenta has shifted up a bit too. He's breech at the moment, but hopefully there's still enough time for him to turn around.

They took bloods for another hba1c, so must remember to ask for results of that next week.

Midwife sent my wee off for testing though, as there was a bit of protein, so she wants to check that I don't have an infection.

Consultant thanked me for being the easiest patient of the day!

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 08/07/2008 18:45

CSWS that sounds all very positive and well done you for behaving lol

mine went fine thanks, they're really pleased with my blood sugar levels and I've just to keep doing what I'm doing

no mention of having previously missed it

am back next week for another check & scan but baby is head down at the moment so hoping it stays that way and doesn't go transverse again

they've decided if I go into spontaneous labour then I can give it a go but if I get to my due date I'll probably be booked in for a C/S

am 37wks tomorrow so either way we could be all done this time in 3 weeks

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2008 18:47

C/S rather than induction? How come?

And more importantly, are you decided on a definite name yet?!

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 08/07/2008 18:52

I had an induction with dd1 and and EMCS with dd2 so I don't think they're keen on induction after C/S tbh?

no, still stuck for names getting fed up with it all now - I seem to be wonderful for suggestion great names for everyone else but nothing biting me on the bum for this one lol

have you picked on yet?

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2008 19:02

Ah, no experience of C/S, so not sure what is and isn't allowed.

Have a thread running today about our top 3 contenders. Don't think they've changed since we last spoke though.

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 08/07/2008 20:27

I think its nice to have a few options for when baby arrives. We had 2 boys and 2 girls names for dd1 and chose it after she was born and with dd2 there were about 4 floating about

we've never used any boys names we like so still have those, its girls am stumped on

dizzydixies · 14/07/2008 20:09

back in again tomorrow for another scan and meeting with cons - my bloods have been higher this week but still within the 4-6 levels they were looking for so fingers crossed they won't changed their minds on cunning current plan of action

hope everyone else well

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/07/2008 08:30

Well if you're in the range they asked for then I don't see how they can complain really.
How did it go?

Disneystar - you had that baby yet?

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 16/07/2008 11:42

CSWS it went fine thanks - the diabetic team are happy enough with me and don't want to see me again unless my bloods go up dramatically so am to go back for an antenatal in 2weeks and if I haven't gone by then I've to have an elective on the 30th thats 2 weeks today [meep]!!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/07/2008 07:58

Have you seen that Hatrick has had her baby dizzy, and she's called him Cassius instead of Nico !
