Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and suffering massively with acid reflux and indigestion, especially in the evenings. The acid is extremely painful and causes me to be sick and have loose stools both morning and night, every day.

I've mentioned to midwife, pregnancy unit and go. Have been given omeprazole but it's not working. I know some suggest drinking milk but I'm allergic. I've tried rennies and gaviscon (gaviscon I can't keep down).

Really really struggling to sleep and eat atm, any advice please :(

Oh bless you it’s awful! Have you tried the gaviscon tablets instead of the liquid?

NicolaCasanova · 08/03/2025 21:34

Don’t lie down, prop yourself up on your side with lots of pillows.

Try to eat really slowly, and avoid eating in the evening (have an early, light dinner).

Try drinking mint tea but check it’s one that is ok during pregnancy.

Keep a food diary so you can pinpoint what makes the acidity worse.

Good luck!

omeprazole always take a while to work in my experience. So maybe keep going with it.

I had terrible acid reflux with my 2nd pregnancy. Echo advice above.

meganna · 08/03/2025 21:57

I drank bottles of Gaviscon advance in pregnancy! You ask for it over the counter at the pharmacy.

I hear you! I'm 37 weeks and the heartburn is absolutely horrific!

It's been bad most of this pregnancy to be honest but it's stepped up a gear in the last month or so and I'm really struggling.

I can't lie flat so sleep is a struggle, I'm throwing up daily so between that and the reflux I'm barely eating/ keeping anything down which means I'm not getting the nutrients i need - i ended up needing an iron infusion last week! I'm on omeprazole but not sure it's making much difference and still popping gaviscon tablets like sweets all day every day.

It's like a constant volcano bubbling away inside.

@meganna says in the OP that she's tried Gaviscon and can't keep it down.

I'm on the Rennies, gavascon tablets, mint tea and Peptac constantly at the moment (33weeks pregnant) and have been suffering badly for about 10 weeks
The pharmacist actually stopped giving me OTC Peptac without a prescription because I was taking so much. My midwife offered me omeprazole but I didn't want it as it takes a while to kick in and hasn't worked for me in the past
If you can narrow down which foods/drinks are making it worse then it's easier to avoid them (although for me it's literally ANYTHING and everything)
You can also get the aniseed flavoured gavascon/Peptac if you could maybe tolerate that instead?
Poor thing! I know the struggle well. X

I read somewhere that you need to raise the head of your bed, not your pillow - is that an option?

Shahhhh · 09/03/2025 08:20

Just here to send a huge hug! I've had awful indigestion and literally the only thing that works for me is milk, and I mean loads of it, so I'm feeling so bad for you that you can't even try that! Hopefully it settles down soon for you OP it's really awful x

My reflux was essentially projectile from week 17. I was on omeprazole twice a day, rennie and gaviscon and they only ever so slightly took the edge off. I found I could eat certain safe foods like porridge that didn’t cause reflux but the only thing that worked was giving birth 😂 Hang on in there. I was so miserable after 22 weeks of it but almost instantly it lifted! Being able to eat again was amazing

Totally agree with this. I was exactly the same my whole pregnancy with DS. And the second I gave birth- it stopped. I do get heartburn now wayyyyyy more frequently than before. But honestly, it went straight away after birth. It's absolutely poo right now. But there's some good advice and bits to try here too- hope something helps. Best of luck!

Thank you Everhone for your advice. This pregnancy has floored me as I never experienced any of this with my first!

Does anyone know if I can take more than 1 omeprazole? Seems to take the edge off in the day if I take one in the morning but it's worn off by the evening and I'm back to square 1 again. It does say 1 per day on the packet.
