My Midwife said to me that I shouldn't use hairdye when pregnant. Isn't it confusing how different MW say different things

poppy34 · 11/05/2008 22:33

I think my mw (and it was at zita west which is usually super cautious) was ok re highlights that don't touch your head and are generally lighter. But agree its so confusing all the different advice you get.

I bleached my hair AND dyed it when pregnant and it was absolutely fine, i spoke to docter, midwife, hairdresser and all said do what u like its only going on ur hair its not like your eating it!

I used semi and permanent dark dyes all the way through pregnancy as I have tons of grey. Didn't notice any difference in how they 'took' at all.

My hair was definitely thicker though as it stopped 'shedding' - it was amazing to wash my hair and only have about 2 hairs in the sieve in the plughole!

highlights are safer as it is foil only- reduced scalp contact

nhs direct advice"

My colourist is highly trained and a sensible and lovely woman, and she put her baby where her mouth was and carried on working when pregnant - she highlighted my hair when she was 2 to 8 months! So I haven't worried about it at all, after seeing that. She says modern dyes are completely safe if professionally administered - the manufacturers would be opening themselves to huge liability otherwise. Can you imagine the US lawsuits if there were a suspected problem?

It's just far too confusing!

I think I'm going to leave mine for now. Will wait until after the first trimester and then see how grey it's gone and take it from there!!

Doctor said hair dye is ok but bleach isn't.

I've had my hair dyed recently, at about three months of pregnancy. Dark brown. No problems.

mrsboogie · 12/05/2008 14:46

I have had mone done twice - dark all over dye. The hairdreser said to me that they can't guarantee that there's no risk - but then that is the same for absolutely everything.

Like everything else - how many women will be doing therse normal things up to 2 or 3 or more months pg becasue they haven't realised they are pregnant - and there's no harm done?

She said if people didnt dye their hair you wd see women walking around everywhere with 9 months regrowth.

Anyway I just went ahead didn't worry about it.

I have been dying mine blonde at home and feeling very guilty about it... Glad everybody else seems to be up to it as well.

Hairdresser said she would only do highlights on PG women, but I am too grey and too poor for those.
