Does sex actually help induce labour?

Might be embarrassing myself here but... genuinely? Has anyone actually experienced this?

Didn't work for me. In any of my 3 pregnancies.

AIthenamesaregone · 01/03/2025 18:24

Did for me

Yellowcircle90 · 01/03/2025 18:26

Yes it worked for me (or it could have just been coincidence) how far along are you OP? You’re not embarrassing yourself at all

Shahhhh · 01/03/2025 18:36

I'm only 37 weeks so definitely wanting baby to stay put a bit longer! Genuinely just curious as I've seen a lot recently of how it does/doesnt. Might mean in a few weeks we'll just have to DTD lots of baby is being stubborn ha!

You need to orgasm and he needs to finish inside you.

Squarestones · 01/03/2025 18:38

Yes it did for me with two of my 3, and also and for my sister's first. It's the only old wives tale that seems like it could be real to me given the oxytocin release.

We tried but were asked to leave the maternity ward waiting room before we could find out.

Redfred00 · 01/03/2025 18:39

I don't think so. In my case clearing our tge bookcase said it.

RaspberryVelvet · 01/03/2025 18:39

It didn’t for me … a very bumpy bus ride and 8 nights of increasingly hot curries might have helped.

Not for me either! I wish!!! I tried nearly everything, was very active etc and still I had 5 overdue babies and 4 inductions 😆

ShowOfHands · 01/03/2025 18:45

No it doesn't. No research at all has found a link between the two. People have sex and then go into labour but that's coincidence. Many more have sex and don't go into labour.

GuiltyGiraffe · 01/03/2025 18:46

I went for a very long walk up and down a steep hill and then had sex in the evening. Waters broke as I was getting out of bed the next morning.

So maybe it worked? I was 41 weeks pregnant though so could also have been neither of those things and just coincidence.

Elderlynurse · 01/03/2025 18:47

Worked every time 36, 37 and 38 weeks

WinterSun20 · 01/03/2025 18:47

My waters broke about 4 hours after having sex at 39 weeks. I'd had zero other signs of labour, not a twinge, no bloody show, nothing. In fact I'd seen the midwife a couple of days before and she checked me over and felt my stomach and said 'I'm sorry to say I have a feeling this baby is a way off yet!'.

Row23 · 01/03/2025 19:02

I think it’s the oxytocin that comes along with it. We went to the cinema and watched a nice rom com, had a really lovely evening together and sex and then at 3am I started having contractions. Can’t say if it was the sec necessarily but I do think all of the oxytocin from such a lovely evening probably helped!

FannyBawz · 01/03/2025 19:05

No

neither other does”

curry
bouncing
a long walk up a steep hill
strong coffee
pineapple
Raspberry tea
homeopathy
reflexology
manifestation
membrane sweep
pessaries

I tried all of the above. Kid was still two weeks late and even then he didn’t want to leave his mammy so add another two days to that 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

MaudePie · 01/03/2025 19:13

It did for me - my first only got going after a sweep (😳) followed by sex (later, not in the midwife’s office!). She was 10 days late still wasn’t engaged (and didn’t drop until I was 10cm), but I’m convinced the sweep plus sex were the only things that got everything moving!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/03/2025 19:15

It might have done.

Or it might have been the sweep. Or the long walks. Or the bouncing on the ball. Or the acupuncture. Or the fact that I was already 40 weeks.

I tried everything so no idea what (if anything) worked.

Good luck.

Squidtentacles · 01/03/2025 19:17

It worked for me (or a coincidence!). That morning we did it, then a few hours later my waters broke. We weren't doing it every day so it did seem like it started things. I was 38+6
