Bleeding at 8 weeks, measuring 6 weeks with heartbeat

Jackofallmasterofnone · 26/02/2025 09:20

Has anyone heard of an experience similar to my current situation?
I'm 8 weeks today. I had a miscarriage 5 months ago at 11 weeks (although they think the baby stopped growing around 6 weeks).
Everything has been fine until yesterday morning when I started spotting. As it happens, yesterday was also my scheduled early reassurance scan at the epau.
During this scan they showed me the heartbeat and said it looked as though baby was around 6 weeks.
This is obviously almost two weeks smaller than my dates, although I'm factoring in potential later ovulation and they didn't say how far into 6 weeks it could be.
Yesterday the bleeding got heavier and bright red, not enough to even reach a pad though, just when I wiped, very tiny clots too, pinhead size.
I'm now on progesterone.
The bleeding has returned to pinkish coloring on toilet paper.

Any good news stories with similar start? I'm a bag of nerves

Hey, sorry to hear this, it’s very stressful.

I had early bright red bleeding in my last successful pregnancy (around 6wks), so it’s not necessarily a bad sign, all you can do is wait and see. Are they re-scanning you?

If they gave you a report with the Crown-Rump Length you can input it into this calculator to see where in 6 weeks they measured you: https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/crown-rump-length . At this gestation the baby is so tiny small differences in measurement can make big differences in estimated gestation.

Sorry you're going through this OP, it must be so stressful not knowing.

I can't help with the bleeding side but I'm terms of dates, if you weren't physically tracking ovulation and aren't 100% sure of the dates then it could be that you had a long cycle with late ovulation that month.

My first scan I would have been 8+2 going by LMP but baby only measured 6+1. By my 12 week dating scan she'd caught up a few days but has been consistently 10 days behind LMP date ever since (I'm now 35+5)

Thank you.
They didn't give me a report or tell me a size. I wish I'd asked, I was just so nervous, I kind of switched off when I heard they are measuring small.
They had suggested a scan in two weeks but I've asked for one next week, I can't wait two weeks.

My last miscarriage all happened in one day, it was incredibly heavy after a light start. I'm hoping this bleeding just stops

Thank you, this is reassuring!! I truly hope we're in the same situation you are.
We were 7+6 yesterday and they didn't tell us how many days into 6 weeks they thought it was. For all we know if could be 6+6, in which case we're not far out. I've just got everything crossed and I'm encouraged that bleeding seems to have quietened down. It's back to pink tinge rather than red blood.

Similar situation but I think yours sounds more hopeful. Should 8 weeks 3 days from LMP but measured only 5weeks 2 days at private scan at 6 weeks. They got me back and said I’d gone to 5weeks 4 days when I should have been coming up to 8 weeks. Concluded a missed.
attended EPU and they scanned and said measuring 5w 4 days but my sac is 7w 2. I go back on Monday for confirmation. I’ve no signs of miscarriage. Although I am getting some back pain and niggles on my left side. All manageable. I’m still super tired and nipples tender when touched.
I hope you get good news. I, however have accepted the inevitable but holding on to a glimmer of hope.

My thoughts are though - would it be wise for me to carry on a pregnancy with the gap of embryo and yolk sac difference? I think mine is quite a difference or is it? This is new to me because I had a successful pregnancy first time round and we got caught early - whereas this time seems to be a real struggle. I worry that with the slow development of embryo/foetus that means there would be significant need or can everything work out in the end?

As an older women I am already aware of the risks and quality of my eggs.

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
My previous miscarriage was my fourth pregnancy. I have three children and have never had a bleed or any other concerns in early pregnancy.
I honestly don't know the answer to your question.
My miscarriage was spotting in the morning and full blown in the evening. It was awful, but there was no question.
The waiting game is a different kind of torture.
I hope you're able to get some answers on Monday. Sending you all luck

I had bleeding at what I thought was 8 weeks pregnant, and was dated at 6 weeks at the EPU. I bled throughout the pregnancy, and it is so, so worrying, but thankfully had a very healthy baby girl who is now 4 years old.

Wishing you all the best for your pregnancy moving forwards.

Jackofallmasterofnone · 27/02/2025 17:31

I've had another scan today because I told EPAU that my bleeding was heavier than when they first scanned. Heartbeat is still going strong, that's made me feel better.
I just need to wait out the next two weeks until the next scan and hope everything is okay in the meantime. Thank you for your help @2020N @Melusina123 @sel2223 @Sunshine8537

This is fab news! I’ll keep everything crossed for you. I’ve felt really sick today. I’m so tired too. Body is playing tricks on me! 😢

@Jackofallmasterofnone @2020N @sel2223
out of interest when you say you measured 5w, 6w etc. are you referring to foetus or sac? Was there much difference in the two with you?

In my case there was an embryo so the measurement was the CRL.
I think if it's earlier it's less accurate but based on the size of the sac

Yes I had a measurement of embryo at 5w 4 days and the sac at 7w 2 days. No heart beat though. NHS said if I had seen a heartbeat and then not it would be definite miscarriage but because they’ve got to take the scan as the first scan from them I’ll be scanned again to see if there is any difference or if infact a heartbeat appears

2020N · 27/02/2025 20:52

@Sunshine8537 I think it was the foetus, but can’t be 100%, I don’t remember them mentioning the sac. I did book myself for a private scan at 8 weeks for reassurance. She was a tiny baby when born, only 5lb 1oz so I’m still not convinced that my dates weren’t accurate to be honest as she was also born at 38+1 which would realign her with my estimated dates too.

I was born 4 weeks early at 4lb 5. My LO was 10 days over and 8lb 11. So the fact that I’m only measuring between 2.5-3.8 is probably not too concerning at this stage however because there is a difference between embryo and sac I think it is. Not sure if there’s hope because the sac is bigger because I can only find stories of the sac being smaller and poor outcomes

2020N · 27/02/2025 21:20

@Sunshine8537 I’m so sorry, the worry and wait is awful and Monday must feel so far away for you. Really wishing for a positive outcome for you.

They just said the baby measured 6 weeks, they didn't mention that the sac was a different size so I'm guessing not.
With my miscarriage last year, they examined the sac and found that to be around 6 weeks in size but didn't find a fetus. I was 11 weeks when I miscarried.
It sounds like every experience is so different.
I wish you didn't have to wait the whole weekend to know, I'm so sorry you're having to do this.
There is a glimmer of hope there though. I was convinced I would hear the heartbeat had stopped yesterday.
I suppose, brace for the worst and hope for the best x

Yes most definitely. I have fully accepted what is happening. I will be in complete shock if it’s the other

Unfortunately I was told I’ve had a missed miscarriage. I took first tablet yesterday and next lot tomorrow. I just want it done now. The waiting has been hard but I felt necessary.

just in the middle of researching conception after miscarriage and when is best to start trying again.

im ok just really disappointed because i started planning life with 2 and what that would look like.

thank you for asking x

I'm so sorry. It's so hard to deal with. After mine last year I wanted to fall again right away.
I hope you fall quickly when you're ready to. Be kind to yourself and treat yourself over the next couple of weeks.
