20 week scan - heart valve concern

Hi all...so we just had our 20wk scan and overall baby was fine. However, the sonographer wanted to get a second opinion from a consultant regarding the heart valve. Baby was in an awkward position in the beginning and from those images she said 'it looks a bit flat', but from subsequent videos she was happy. However, she still wanted a consultant to look at it. Bloodflow to the heart was fine, and it was beating as normal, but i am SO worried. Not sure what it all means, all she said was on the first imagies it looked flat and it needs to flap, but then on other images it looked fine.

Has anyone ever gone through this? I am worried sick 😥 I know it could be nothing and it was just due to baby being in an awkward position, especially as she was happy with the other video she took afterwards, but i am no having to wait until next week to hear back from the consultant. Any words of advice? 💕

this was me 16 weeks ago and I had a month of stress waiting for an echocardiogram and everything turned out fine they couldn't see anything. they are so risk adverse they would rather flag something up and get a specialist opinion because the heart is smaller than an acorn at that stage. stay away from google as well my lovely take it one step at a time but for me everything worked out just fine xx

thank you for your response ❤and so happy it all worked out for you and your little one! I got a call this morning saying the dr wasn't worried, but is sending us to a London hospital for a fetal echocardiogram. Now i am worried sick that they wouldn't just rescan me at the hospital but instead sending me for a specialist scan 😥in my head i think they would have just rescanned me at my local hospital rather than for a specialist one? its all so hard an anxiety inducing. Were you sent for a echocardiogram straight away as well instead of a second hospital scan? xx

no you have to remember the sonographer at 20 week scan are VERY generalist and risk adverse if they see anything they aren't sure of they aren't allowed to rescan it HAS to go to a specialist it's standard procedure I was sent for the echo cardiogram right away not a rescan and in fact I had to get it done twice a month apart before they would sign it off because the heart is so tiny and they want to be sure! xx

again, thank you so so much for your reassuring words! I really appreciate it. I guess naively i was under the impression i would get a rescan at the hospital and that the echocardiogram was booked as it was more serious. I'm very lucky they had a space tomorrow so thankfully i won't have long to wait. Just hoping it's all just to rule anything out and to cover their own backs xx

I have a heart valve issue (bicuspid aortic valve) and frankly if nobody had ever told me about it I'd never know, it's given me no bother in all my 41 years.

So even if it is a thing, it may not be a problem.

you are so welcome I know how scary it is and no matter how everyone reassured me even if there was something there it could be minor....it didn't help me! good luck for tomorrow you and your little one are in the best hands! xx
