Yolk sac but no fetal pole

Hello!
I wondered if anyone had anything similar and could offer reassurance…
I started with some cramps and very light pink spotting last week so went to the early pregnancy unit for a scan. I should have been 6 weeks (according to date of my LMP) I had an internal scan and the hospital said they could see the pregnancy sac and yolk sac but no fetal pole, she also said I was measuring ‘under 5 weeka’ and I am booked back in 2 weeks for a follow up.

I haven’t had any spotting since last week but do still have the odd cramps. Has anyone had anything similar happen?

Exact same situation. Went for a private scan yesterday due fo worries it might be ectopic. By LMP should have been 6w 3d. Gestational sac and yolk seen but nothing else. They said it might just be too early/dates off but sadly pretty sure i’m going to have another miscarriage. It’s going to be a long two weeks 😢

The waiting is awful isn’t it :( Sorry to hear about your previous miscarriage, did you have a similar experience to this if you don’t mind me asking?

I had a private scan booked in for this Friday and think I’ll still go ahead.

So awful - hope you have positive news soon.

Was different last time - was 9 weeks and started bleeding. Scan at EPU showed no heartbeat and was measuring 7w. Miscarried naturally a few days later.

Awful as we were hoping for better luck this time.

Not reassurance unfortunately but I had a similar experience last year in terms of pink/brown spotting and some cramping. I had a scan around 6+2 and they could see a gestational and yolk sac but no fetal pole. They said I could just be behind in my dates and booked me in again for 2 weeks.

When I went back, the gestational sac had grown but still not fetal pole. By this point I knew it was over as I was measuring way behind than what I should've been. Unfortunately because the sac had grown they wouldn't confirm a miscarriage and I had to go back a week later. The next time they could actually see the beginning of something in the sac but weren't sure if it was a breakdown of the pregnancy or fetal pole. I was asked to go back again a week later despite knowing it was over and I did start spotting again that week. The scan confirmed it had broken and I ended up starting medical management a few days later.

It honestly could go one way or the other - I read loads of posts from people who'd been in a similar situation and then things caught up. I really hope you get a positive outcome when you go back!

We're you physically tracking ovulation? Are you 100% sure of your dates or is it just going from LMP/apps like FLO etc?

I have long and irregular cycles and had my first scan when LMP had me at 8+2, I measured 6+1.

I'm now 35+4

LMP is an early guide only based on a very average 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14, it's not accurate for a lot of women.

I have long irregular cycles and when I thought I was 6 weeks I was actually only 4 so had a pregnancy of unknown location as nothing could be seen on ultrasound, went back 2 weeks later and yolk sac and gestational sac seen but no fetal pole. 4 days later heartbeat was there🤗

Could you have got your ovulation date wrong and be less than you thought?

I'm 39+2 with that pregnancy today and having my little boy via c section tomorrow!

Good luck🤞🏽

6 weeks is still early to see anything so don't worry just yet! When it's that small measurements are hard to get right. Go for your private scan this Fri and your gestation sac should have grown by at least 5cm to be viable and you should see something then (since you've got a yolk sac already). I'd only worry if your sac hasn't grown by much over next few days.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your responses!

My LMP is based from Flo and I wasn’t tracking ovulation so maybe the week difference could be accurate.

My next scan at the hospital is next Friday so fingers crossed things have progressed then!

I wanted to add another positive story! I went for an v early scan and saw no fetal pole. I was certain on my ovulation and conception date! I went back two weeks later and baby had “caught up” and everything was fine! This has happened to me in both my pregnancies now, it’s very odd !
