Hi.. I’m hoping for a bit of reassurance/advice please

I’m 25 weeks and had a private scan recently.
i was told baby girls head is measuring just below average but that can be considered normal and not to worry.

has anyone else ever been told this ?

i will talk to the midwife about it but I’m just a bit panicked.

I’ve went down a rabbit hole on google which of course is never a good thing

Relax. With my first baby I was told that they were “big for dates” “you’ll need an early delivery” etc. I went nearly 2 weeks over with “baby is going to very big” - baby was just over 7lb! Second baby - “very small”, “concerned baby isn’t growing as expected” etc. This “very small” baby was just under 9.5 lbs!

Different as I was 35 and had gestational diabetes but was told dd was measuring 45 weeks at 35 weeks and would be at least 10lb. I was induced at 37 weeks, dd was born at 8lb 6 oz. As an aside dh is 6ft 6in tall and I'm not small so genetically I'd have been surprised if she'd not been big.

Just below average is fine. Do you know the percentile? 50 is bang on average and not every baby can be 50, some will be bigger and some smaller eg my babies femur is “smaller than average” on the 35th centile. But they don’t worry until it’s under the 3rd centile. Not sure if the same for head measurements but I’m sure they’ll have a cut off and if they said it’s fine I’m sure it is. My first baby had a 99th centile head and he’s absolutely fine, just to upsize hats!

Thank you so much for a quick reply , this is my first so just completely paranoid about absolutely everything.

i am quite petite but its just because she only mentioned the head is a bit below average size that panicked me

i of course jumped on google that brought up a bunch of possible birth abnormalities and conditions

Exactly as @ecossegirl91 said. Measurements and centiles are in comparison to every baby in the country. The way we are all different shapes and sizes, so are babies. The terminology would be different if there was a concern, like baby is small for gestational age or growth restricted. For example DS was 80th centile for length ie bigger than average, and 35th ish for tummy and head ie smaller than average. He's long legged and slight. Please don't worry, perfectly normal. And in future please please ask your sonographer/midwife/doctor to clarify anything in the moment because I guarantee they can explain it better face to face and put you at ease. They're more than happy to😊
