Drank before I realised I was pregnant

looking for some advice.. I drank 2 medium glasses of wine and a cocktail at around 4 weeks after conception. I’ve only just found out I’m pregnant at about 6 weeks and am so worried and unsure what to do. I’ve heard so much about fasd and that there’s a risk even drinking small amounts. im
also pretty small in frame and don’t usually drink alcohol at all so that is a lot by my standards!

any advice/help please!

I was 4 weeks pregnant (unaware) and went to creamfields festival!! I am now nearly 30 weeks pregnant... So many women drink when they are unaware they are pregnant, don't stress yourself out x

BellaCiao23 · 21/02/2025 11:42

Absolutely nothing to worry about. As I was being wheeled for my emergency C-section I asked the midwife this question. She laughed and said. “Everyone asks that!” I drank more than that, too. Probably two bottles of wine each weekend.

cestlavielife · 21/02/2025 11:43

Bottle of wine a day is a problem
Half a bottle of vodka each day is a problem

This one off or two off is not

murraymcgill · 21/02/2025 11:46

@NEMamma aww don't worry yourself I found out I was 6 months when I found out and i was 23 having the time of my life my boy is 26 great guy everything went well at birth so dont worry yourself

Does anyone have any experience of having older kids after a similar experience? Think I’m worried as the foetal alcohol problems bits I’ve read about seem to show up when children are about 5/6 or older? It’s so scary all the information out there!

According to the NHS, “FASD can happen when alcohol in the mother's blood passes to her baby through the placenta”. Your placenta doesn’t take over until 8-12 weeks, so I really wouldn’t worry about it. Just don’t drink regularly.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 21/02/2025 11:51

You'll be absolutely fine. You'd be amazed how many people drank before they knew they were pregnant (and worse) and for some got quite far along too!
I had 2 bottles of prosecco a few days before I found out I was pregnant with DS1. Was upset and worried, he's about to turn 4, he's absolutely fine.

ecossegirl91 · 21/02/2025 11:52

You’ll be fine my friend didn’t know she was pregnant till 16weeks and was drinking much more regularly. A healthy 7 year old boy.

Exactly. I did a lot of doom scrolling late night reading of scientific studies and you have to drink ALOT, on a very regular basis, right the way through the pregnancy for it to have a significant affect (not condoning drinking while pregnant at all, just trying to reassure!).

Possiblynotever · 21/02/2025 11:55

I drank until I was 4 months pregnant ( I was unaware ). My DD is 21 and wonderful. Do not worry!

Mine is 26 and has an Oxbridge First. Please don’t worry.

Sassybooklover · 21/02/2025 11:57

It's common. I drank alcohol before I realised I was pregnant. My son is a very healthy 14 year old! Please don't worry.

TheHorticulturalHussy · 21/02/2025 12:02

You're completely fine. I was on a 3 week holiday before realising that I was pregnant and drank bucket loads. DS is now early 30s and a senior economic advisor to the Bank of Japan, fluent in 3 languages. So you definitely haven't harmed your baby!
Congratulations by the way 😀

allfurcoatnoknickers · 21/02/2025 12:05

I took a pregnancy test because I had a hangover that wouldn't go away! DS is now 5 and he's totally fine.

ShipshapeShore · 21/02/2025 12:07

My surprise nephew was initially thought to be an epic hangover one New Year. He's now 15 and thriving - bright, healthy and taller than the entire family!

I drank copious amounts of gin at 5 weeks pregnant (periods were quite irregular) she's now 32 nearly and a lawyer.
Honestly don't worry about such a small amount

FrenchandSaunders · 21/02/2025 12:13

Try not to worry OP, many people drink far more than that before finding out they’re pregnant.

I spent one summer necking all sorts at weddings, hen dos and bbqs before finding out I was pregnant with twins, who are now adults.

feathermucker · 21/02/2025 12:17

The amount you've described will NOT cause FAS, don't worry. You'll drive yourself mad if you keep worrying about it. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy

vix3rd · 21/02/2025 12:23

I remember someone telling me the amount you have to drink for a baby to be born with FASD is something like a bottle of vodka every day of the pregnancy.
You'll be fine.

sel2223 · 21/02/2025 21:20

I was on an all inclusive holiday when I found out I was pregnant- don't even know how many cocktails I'd been having!
I'm now 35 weeks and all looking absolutely perfect.

Don't forget there are women who don't even know they are pregnant up until they go into labour

CatamaranViper · 21/02/2025 21:25

My son is 8 and I went on 2 hen weekends and had several nights out before I found out I was pregnant (I was 14 weeks when I found out).

DS did come early at 33 weeks but we don't know if that was related at all. There's nothing to indicate that it was. You'd never know if you met him that he was a prem baby, let alone a baby i'd drank heavily throughout a good chunk of my pregnancy with.

Most of my friends with kids around the same age drank before they knew too.
I do work with one child who had FAS but his mum is still an alcoholic. He is such a sweet and clever little boy.

Msmoonpie · 21/02/2025 21:27

Just try to use some logic.

Many women do not realise they are pregnant straight away. Is there a huge number of babies that are born with alcohol related issues ? No.

Please stop worrying.

User21012025 · 21/02/2025 21:32

Please don't worry, everything will be absolutely fine. I was on holiday when I found out I was pregnant, had been on a few 'booze cruises', drank every night on holiday. I was around 8 weeks pregnant when we realised and obviously stopped drinking. There is no, no way you need to worry about FAS, I think this applies to someone who drinks regularly throughout their pregnancy!
Congratulations OP ❤️

thaisweetchill · 21/02/2025 21:33

I did the same, my nearly 6 year old is thriving at school and absolutely fine.

Randomease · 21/02/2025 21:35

Lolz. I drank a whole bottle of wine and several rum cocktails at 3 weeks pregnant. She came out half goat but, seriously, it’s too early to cause damage. At that stage damaged cells either split and renew or a miscarriage happens.

She is 10 now and ‘exceeding’ in most school subjects.

A small amount does not cause FASD - that bullshit comes from sanctimonious American websites. I remember reading one where the mum claimed she had one glass of wine…..Trump style gaslighting
