Drank before I realised I was pregnant

looking for some advice.. I drank 2 medium glasses of wine and a cocktail at around 4 weeks after conception. I’ve only just found out I’m pregnant at about 6 weeks and am so worried and unsure what to do. I’ve heard so much about fasd and that there’s a risk even drinking small amounts. im
also pretty small in frame and don’t usually drink alcohol at all so that is a lot by my standards!

any advice/help please!

Does anyone have any experience of having older kids after a similar experience? Think I’m worried as the foetal alcohol problems bits I’ve read about seem to show up when children are about 5/6 or older? It’s so scary all the information out there!

I drank a lot more than you have before I knew I was pregnant (Christmas period) and DS1 graduated with a 1st in engineering last year. Don’t worry!

If you’d be comfortable to PM me it would be useful to know your experience in terms of how much alcohol was consumed and when etc as I think that’s more what I’m concerned about

I assume her daughter is adopted

But @RosieJo58 she’s not drinking through her pregnancy, she didn’t know she was pregnant. She knows she’s pregnant now, so she’s not taking the risk. Her worrying about an extremely small risk (albeit one I don’t agree with you with), is not helping. It’s done, millions of women have done the same with no effect. I’m sorry about your daughter, but terrifying a poor woman in the early stages of pregnancy won’t change anything.

Can you confirm this @RosieJo58 ?

Especially as you are refusing to answer how much alcohol was actually drank during the pregnancy

Hi OP. Two children. Never intended to conceive the first so I was pregnant whilst we were still partying.

Second child was planned but I thought I had my period, turned out it was implantation bleeding and I was downing shots of limoncello whilst 7 weeks pregnant.

Both DC are brilliant, oldest is applying to oxbridge.

Also FWIW in my day the guidelines said '1 - 2 units of alcohol, once or twice a week' and we had a glass of red wine after NCT every week.

penguinbiscuity · 24/02/2025 17:44

You and fifty-zillion of us did just the same. FWIW, I drank a fair bit more than you and DS is an intelligent accomplished young man.

3 drinks very early on really isn't going to cause FASD. Please ignore the scaremongers.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I can only assume because I've been on a few similar threads and no one has ever admitted their biological child has fas, plenty of parents of adopted children have mentioned their stories. It takes a lot of balls to openly admit your drinking is the reason your child has fas.
I don't think I've ever known a child who wasn't adopted or fostered be diagnosed with fas would take a lot of balls for a doctor to tell a parent their drinking caused the fas when they could just take the easy root and diagnose any other intellectual disability

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 24/02/2025 18:09

@Scrubberdubber that makes a lot of sense. Its sad for the children involved but I don't think scaring first time Mums who have consumed small quantities of alcohol is the answer.

For those who NEED to know alcohol was consumed prior to falling pregnant and up to 8 months of pregnancy. A mix of lager and spirits. Thanks for making me feel shit. I don't find this forum supportive or helpful

Sorry for your situation. This is completely different to op having a few drinks before there was even a placenta though

When I was 29 I found out I was 9 weeks pregnant. Totally unplanned (I was taking the pill at the time) so came as quite a shock. I vividly remember the horror of looking back at my diary of those weeks and seeing how many boozy nights I had had during that time...a few 30th birthdays, two hen dos and a wedding and a few other normal nights out where I had been drinking. I was distraught and couldn't help feeling that I must have ruined my baby...how could I not have?

Anyway, long story short, he was an absolute dream of a baby, dream of a toddler, dream of young boy and pre-teen. He's 16 now and a bit of a moody, lazy bugger but I don't think I can blame that on the alcohol consumed in pregnancy 😆 He's perfection ❤️
