Drank before I realised I was pregnant

looking for some advice.. I drank 2 medium glasses of wine and a cocktail at around 4 weeks after conception. I’ve only just found out I’m pregnant at about 6 weeks and am so worried and unsure what to do. I’ve heard so much about fasd and that there’s a risk even drinking small amounts. im
also pretty small in frame and don’t usually drink alcohol at all so that is a lot by my standards!

any advice/help please!

You drank once it’s okay . Don’t drink when you’re pregnant it’s not good for the baby . Alcohol is a spirit enhancer , if you are low and you drink you will pass it on your unborn child. Be careful with alcohol. It’s not be taken lightly. It’s can have a diverse effect on your body liver and kidneys . And your immune system can fail causing problems with your unborn child.

Stop being so alarmist. OP is neither 'drinking when pregnant' nor 'taking it lightly'

I found out at 27 weeks

In that time i was drinking, smoking, self-medicating a broken foot as i didnt see a dr, partying with enhancements, going on rides that pull 4-5g, lifting heavy tubs and marquees while working as a carnie pulling some crazy hours

DD was born full term with zero issues with the birth, her health, nothing at all has popped up as a result of how i was when i was pregnant
Dont stress OP

itsallgreektomeeeeeee · 22/02/2025 07:39

I went on a hen weekend with lots of alcohol involved (seriously, lots)!

She's in her 30s now and fit and well!

MumofHennHals · 23/02/2025 05:08

I got really drunk at a family party and kept falling over, now I realise it's because I was pregnant, didn't know and my body reacted differently. I must've been 3/4 weeks at the time and found out at 5 weeks.

My daughter is a crazy cute clever 4 year old now :)

doodahdayy · 23/02/2025 05:12

I got quite drunk a few days before I found out I was pregnant with ds2 including tequila shots. He's a heathy 4 month old now. A one off will be ok

Mummorgan · 23/02/2025 08:58

Alcohol consumption too much of it can damage your body depending on the type of drink that you drink . Not everyone can handle alcohol. Some are strong others are weak. Some have anger problems from rooted problems and the drink can enhance it , as it’s a spirit . We all have good and bad emotions within us , ( good spirit & bad spirit ) do you understand this terminology. whatever that is most dominant will come out when you’re under it .
if your an emotional person it will make you cry.
Understanding your emotions and your feelings and stop acting like you’re not a part of the problem. If you have not explained this situation to people you can’t be helped or trusted with anything you have to say .

TeacupsAndCakes · 23/02/2025 09:02

Aww don't worry! I went to a wedding when I was pregnant (and didn't have a clue) and its one of the most drunk times I've ever had! It didn't affect me atall in pregnancy (obvs scared and nervous when I found out too as I thought I'd done damage) but now have a beautiful 2 year old girl. Obviously not advocating drinking in pregnancy (in case someone says this...) and things will all be fine etc but just reassurance that if you didn't know it'll be fine!! X

Mummorgan · 23/02/2025 09:03

What kind of person are you ? A happy person , a stressful person or a workaholic. It really depends on your personality type and blood type.

RosieJo58 · 23/02/2025 09:38

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is very real. This condition happens when alcohol is drunk during pregnancy. Alcohol passes through the placenta to the baby and for some can cause physical problems and learning difficulties. There is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy as it is not known why some babies are affected and not others - no alcohol no risk. Its worth doing your own research, health professionals are often ill informed sadly. If you are drinking and find out you are pregnant the best thing to do is to stop drinking then. If you are planning to get pregnant don't drink. There are people on here who will crisis me and bombard me for speaking up. But do your own research. I am a public health nurse and the mother of a child with FASD

NEMamma · 23/02/2025 11:26

I have obviously not drank anymore since finding out I’m pregnant but can’t change what has happened. If you don’t mind me asking how much alcohol was consumed and when with your child with FASD?

Seriously, how is that helpful?

The OP started this thread feeling concerned about drinking a relatively small amount before she knew she was pregnant. Not once has she said she's continuing to drink alcohol now she knows!

How are you being helpful here?

Stai · 23/02/2025 19:14

@RosieJo58

So the OP is fine then. You said that it is transferred through the placenta, but the placenta hasn’t taken over.

OP did not ask for a lecture on general alcohol intake!! She was asking for reassurance 🙄
OP your baby will be absolutely fine . Placenta doesn’t kick in until about 8-10 weeks when alcohol could cross over to the embryo.
Congratulations and enjoy your pregnancy.X

@doodahday @sel2223 Stai and others who have berated me - I knew it would happen!! This is a forum where people can share knowledge and understanding. I have not called out or blamed the person at all. There are some comments on here that are really quite worrying in terms of people's ignorance and lack of understanding. @NEMamma I am sorry if you have taken offence by my reply. It was not about blame or stigma in any shape or form.

Cattery · 24/02/2025 14:52

I drank whilst pregnant. No problems. Two adult sons who are thriving

If you feel you were berated (which you weren't) it is because your reply was totally unnecessary.

You were asked how your reply was helpful to someone seeking reassurance for something they can not go back and change. The OP did not know she was pregnant and has not had any more alcohol since she found out - what else is she supposed to do?

Putting the fear of God up someone for something they cannot go back and change isn't right at all.

NEMamma · 24/02/2025 15:19

It’s ok I’m not really offended or anything but just looking for peoples experiences. Would you mind sharing your experience on what happened for you and the outcome now? I guess I know the guidance already

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 24/02/2025 15:24

Yes, for the poster who's child has FASD, I'm sorry to hear that, but it would help if you gave more info?

RosieJo58 · 24/02/2025 15:30

@NEMamma FASD is a spectrum Disorder, people are affected differently. I feel if I answer your question I will be "attacked" further. All I wanted to do is raise people's awareness - sorry for that.
@sel2223 how are your comments useful? Denying a condition that exists and my daughter struggles every day. There is no safe limit. As the research shows not all babies who were exposed to alcohol in the womb are affected BUT they don't know why this is so no alcohol no risk. As for the OP she isn't drinking, stopped when she found out - best thing to do.

Stai · 24/02/2025 16:07

@RosieJo58

I wasn’t berating you at all!! I agreed with you that the OP’s placenta hasn’t taken over so she has nothing to worry about.

Back in the mists of time when I was pregnant with DD, 1-2 units of alcohol per week were allowed during pregnancy and I drank at that level throughout. DD is absolutely fine. Of course I would follow today’s advice and drink zero now. I hope this reassures you.

RosieJo58 · 24/02/2025 16:39

@Stai the placenta kicks in at 10 - 12 weeks. Alcohol is a tetrogen - effects the nature of cells. Its affects can be as early as 3 weeks pregnant. As the brain is the thing that keeps developing throughout pregnancy of course the sooner someone stops drinking the better. The problem is that with alcohol there is always a big " well it never did my kids any harm" - well I'm pleased for you but why would you knowingly take the risk.
For those who have asked about the affects on my daughter - she has a learning disability . Difficulties with executive functioning and working memory, emotional dysregulation etc and physical signs (thickened heart valves), dyspraxia. She is also the most creative, caring, generous and funny kid I know.

NEMamma · 24/02/2025 16:44

If you’d be comfortable to PM me it would be useful to know your experience in terms of how much alcohol was consumed and when etc as I think that’s more what I’m concerned about
