Early pregnancy exhaustion - when does it end?

I'm around 11 weeks pregnant with our second child, and I just feel persistently completely and utterly exhausted. The exhaustion is extreme to point that I can barely function. I have a 3 year old to look after but I feel like I'm being a crap mum at the moment because I can barely stay awake while I'm looking after her, no matter energetically play the way we usually would. I feel like I'm wading through wet cement all the time. I end up going to bed at the same time as my daughter (7:30), often not getting up until 12 hours later and I still wake up feeling exhausted. I definitely felt very tired during the early part of my first pregnancy but I don't remember it being this extreme, and I can't remember how long it lasted.

For those who experienced extreme early pregnancy tiredness, when did it end? I'm desperate to start feeling like a functional human being again.

I remember this so well - it feels like your very bones are tired doesn't it? Like you are living under a heavy weight at the bottom of the sea!

It definitely started to improve for me around about 13/14/15 weeks, feeling slightly less "submerged" each week.

I've never forgotten that feeling - I used to walk to the bus stop every morning, but had to stop and sit on someone's wall for a rest on the way as I was just so exhausted walking up my street.

Hope you start feeling better soon OP, it's hard when you already have a little one to engage with and all you want to do is sleeeeep!

I’m 14 weeks and no let up 😔 the only thing that helps is to sleep and sleep and don’t over do it.
for me it’s like a hangover every day.

I'm refusing to have a second child because of this hell. Well done to you for getting through it.

ChopstickNovice · 21/02/2025 12:39

It stopped for me about 16 weeks. I used to go to work and go home and immediately to bed!!

Wonderwom · 21/02/2025 12:40

In about 19 years

I'm 13 weeks pregnant with my second. In my first pregnancy it stopped at 13 weeks but this time it hasn't got any better yet- I am really struggling too and feel all the same things about being a crap mum! Hang in there

Lulu89x · 21/02/2025 17:00

I’m 17 weeks and I’m still exhausted.

Around 15 weeks for me, tiredness was awful I was convinced I had low iron or something I couldn't believe how tired I was constantly. The good news is once it eased up I had so much energy

RandomMess · 21/02/2025 17:05

I would start taking floradix in case you also happen to have low iron.

Joddlebod · 21/02/2025 17:05

I was exactly the same. It will get easier just go with it. I remember getting a lease of life back about 6 weeks before I gave birth and I painted my whole house 😅

The really debilitating exhaustion lasted till about 18-20 weeks for me. It's so hard with another child especially so you have my full sympathy!

I'm 35 weeks now and it's a different kind of exhaustion now.

Absolutely this. I told my husband this last night. I’m an older mum so we will only have one baby but even if I was 30 I don’t think I could do this again.

Yes! That’s it a different kind of exhaustion.

for me it’s like terrible jet lag and a hangover combined with zero let up once you’ve had a good sleep
