Maternity trousers, strange fit, or is my body strange?

I'm nearly 18 weeks pregnant, and have been wearing a pair of my mums jeans as they were big on me, but lately I've had to wear them open with a hair bobbin fastening them. Now that it's getting warmer and I want to take my jumper off I don't want to look mental with my trousers open.

I had gotten a pair of maternity jeans in H&M in the sale over Christmas, and decided to break them out now. Is it normal that the "waistband" ie the part with the button is so constricting? It's fine when I'm standing up, but when I'm sitting it's really uncomfortable because it's pressing into my lower abdomen. When sitting it's more comfortable even to pull them up and over my belly even though they're extremely tight that way, rather than feeling like I'm being cut in half.

Are all maternity trousers like this? I can't find any in shops where I live so I'll have to buy them online, but I don't want to waste money if they are all like this. I'm not sure if I'm somehow too "fat" for maternity trousers?? I've attached some pictures to show what I mean. The one with my hand sticking out is to show the waistband part that's cutting in.

I don't know but I've got a couple of pairs that I have the same problem with.

I guess they must work for some people! I'm mostly wearing stretchy trousers/ leggings at the moment!

You're not pregnant enough for them I reckon. They need a lot of bigger bump.

I think the sizing on maternity clothes is off, maybe try a bigger size?

I thought that too, but will I really end up with nothing at that part of my abdomen? As in, as the bump grows and rises, will I go back to being slim at that part of my belly?kind of between my hip bones

These are already pretty big, when I'm standing they are totally baggy around my legs and bum, but sitting down the waistband seems to just be really tight.

I haven't worn low waisted jeans in about twenty years so maybe this is just normal for low rise jeans? I'll see if I have any friends who happen to have maternity trousers a size larger I could try on!

I have a pair of leggings but it's not warm enough yet for leggings 🥲 I think the problem is that they're basically just super low rise jeans? Which seems like a cruel joke for pregnant women.

The waistband kind of tucked in below my bump with H&M skinny maternity jeans for me but agree that that's when you're more pregnant with a bigger bump

User543211 · 20/02/2025 08:34

I did find it very strange wearing the low rise style after years of high waisted! I guess there's no way to make a maternity pair like that though.
I didn't really like them so just bought normal jeans in a bigger size, bobble holding them together an a baggy top when I could. That didn't work when the bump got big though! I also stuck to long dresses/skirts or a pair of dungarees otherwise.

Butterflysunshine01 · 20/02/2025 08:41

Yeah I had the same issue!! My bump never got big enough to comfortably wear them! I lived in stretchy dresses , with maternity tights from lovall.

cherrybluerazz · 20/02/2025 08:48

I don't think you have a big enough bump to let them fit properly yet. I didn't start wearing maternity jeans until I was around 30 weeks. H&M Skinny high rise maternity ones were def the best. One pair lasted through 3 pregnancies for Me!

I had the same issue with jeans from Isabella Oliver. Really cut into me.

My solution has been Lovall winter maternity leggings which I have lived in for the back end of the second trimester and all of third. They are unbelievably comfortable, fleecy on the inside and are so warm!!! https://lovall.com/collections/maternity-fleece-leggings
Honestly can recommend enough. I have alternated two pairs for over four months now. Wash inside out at 30-40 degrees every other day and still look as good as new.
