I went to the epau last week due to having bad cramping and a possibly suspected ectopic. I had a scan but it was too early to see anything and was told to come back in a week. I also had hcg levels done and they were at the high end and did more than double within 48 hours so they were happy with that. Fast forward to today and I've been for another scan, I am currently 5 weeks 3 days according to my calculations and during the internal scan two sacs was seen but only one had a yolk sac and a fetal pole, the other one was smaller and empty. I was told that it looks like a twin pregnancy but one may have not progressed. I have got to go back next week for a rescan to see what's happening.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm really worried and just want to know what's happening. I've read that it could be just too early and that the other twin may be hiding and be able to be seen on the next scan but I've also seen that it could be vanishing twin.

I had something similar but found out at the twelve week scan, one baby progressed to eleven weeks and then stopped (I'd felt really sick but suddenly felt better at eleven weeks, no other signs) and the other baby is currently studying for her A levels and today appears to have half of Hobbycraft over the sitting room floor. Good luck to you OP, really hope the rest of the pregnancy goes well.

Thankyou for your reply! So glad to hear your surviving twin is thriving🩷

This is my third pregnancy and I've felt a lot more sick earlier on this time so I did have suspicions that something was different. Fingers crossed I get more answers next week🤞🏼xx

Yes, I'd felt much sicker in the twin pregnancy than when pregnant with DD1 but didn't put it down to twins despite there being a strong family history of fraternal twins. 🤔 DD2 has always been a joy and a wonder to us (except when she gets oil paints over the table cloth yet again, then I feel she is slightly less wonderful...). Best wishes for the appointment next week, pregnancy is such a rollercoaster and so much of it is out of your control.

Hi OP,

I had this with my DS. Had some early bleeding with him and so had a scan at my local EPU at 5 weeks and 4 days - similar to you, two sacs but only one with a foetal pole. I went back for a scan at 7 weeks and one sac had continued to progress and the other hadn’t. This sounds really callous but because I had had a miscarriage before I was just glad that one pregnancy was viable.

best of luck lovely 🩷

I had similar for my third pregnancy. I felt very different from the start - I had no sickness with my first two pregnancies but felt awful with my third, constantly sick & dizzy. I went for my 12 week scan half expecting to be told it was twins.

There was one baby with a strong heart beat and then the sonographer showed us that there was a twin but no heart beat, it looked like they had stopped growing at around 9 weeks. I had vanishing twin syndrome and the twin was gradually absorbed by my body and DS's, I had a lot of scans and one day at around week 30 there was no longer any trace of DS's twin. It was a hard pregnancy, I did struggle a lot with the grief of losing a baby whilst trying to be grateful for the healthy baby I was still carrying. I had very conflicting feelings.

DS is now 8. I do often wonder still what life would have been like if his twin was here but I am just grateful that DS is such a happy and healthy boy.

I hope you get some more answers at your next scan and that your pregnancy all goes well.

I had exactly this - one heartbeat and one empty sac at 8/9 weeks

Other than that, the pregnancy continued normally and DD was born a couple of weeks early.

I also wonder about the baby that was not to be - I'm absolutely sure in my heart or hearts that it was a girl and I have named her to myself.

I am certain that my baby that was not to be was a girl too. I had a feeling before the scan that I was having twins, a boy and a girl. Once my son was born I gave his twin a name as I felt sure it was a girl.

Yeah, my second pregnancy had a vanishing twin. I was told there was a second sac that hadn't progressed at a scan at 10 weeks. At my 12 week scan it had gone.

I had awful nausea and felt so tired in the early stages so had an inkling that either we were expecting twins or that something wasn’t quite right. I felt nauseous and tired with my first pregnancy, but this was on another scale! We found at our 12 week scan that we had been expecting twins, but unfortunately one twin had stopped developing at 8 weeks. It’s was a big shock and I had many conflicting emotions. I’m currently 27 weeks pregnant and this little one is doing well. 🤞🏼

As hard as it is, try to keep yourself busy until your rescan. Unfortunately there is nothing that you can do aside from wait, and keeping yourself calm and healthy is the only thing in your control for you and your pregnancy at this moment in time.

Wishing you and your baby all the best for the rest of your pregnancy.
