Bleeding at 19+2 Weeks

Hi all,

I’ve had some sudden bright red bleeding today. I’ve been seen at maternity triage.
My cervix is still closed and my waters haven’t gone.
They’ve taken bloods and water sample but no results from those yet.
They’ve brought my anatomy scan forward to tomorrow morning so I’m hoping for more answers tomorrow.
I’m so worried about my baby, I never experienced this in my previous pregnancy.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Any advice please 😢 x

I did at a similar gestation to you. It was really scary but they took swans and it turned out I had thrush despite having no symptoms. Hope everything is OK for you x

JennyTals · 19/02/2025 18:22

Happened to me, at 33 weeks, the gave the steroid injections for the babies lungs, they swabbed me which caused more bleeding

Kept me in for a couple of days , then let me go home

And he's now playing on his xbox
Born at 37 weeks

It’s terrifying isn’t it!
That’s so interesting, I’d never have thought of that as a cause, I’d be over the moon for that to be the cause right now!
Were you and baby okay for the rest of the pregnancy? x

I feel like they’ve also caused more bleeding in me!
They swabbed me to test whether my waters had gone and then I got the delightful speculum to check my cervix was still closed.
Thank you for your reassurance ❤️ x

Yes the bleeding got quite heavy after the swabs, they only really seemed concerned if there was any clotting.

Take it as an excuse to take it easy xx watch some films etc

Wishing you all the best for you and baby

Swabs not swans!

This happened to me several times and its was a SCH (sub chronic haematoma) basically an unexplained internal bruise. I had bleeds at 6, 12, and 20 weeks. Baby was fine and is now smashing up her playroom.

I was advised to refrain from vigorous activity, otherwise normal pregnancy.

Thank you, I’ll be honest that I’ve been trying to carry on as normal so I’ve probably not rested as much as I should have.
I’m too worried to move tonight, hoping for good news tomorrow ❤️ x

It’s so scary how little we all still know about maternity really. Like how do you even bleed from an internal bruise but still have a closed cervix 🤯 it’s so scary! Thank you for sharing, I’m really hoping they tell me baby is still all okay and safe tomorrow x

I had lots of bright red bleeding at 16 weeks.
Went to A & E, it had stopped by the time I got there. No cause found and they weren't worried. Rest of pregnancy was uneventful.
Hope you are reassured soon x

Thank you! Did you have any pain or cramping of any level with your bleeding? Or just the bleed itself? x

Happened to me too and they could never find a reason for it. They are now 17 years old!

Child is nearly ten now so I am casting my mind back a bit - but as I recall it no pain, no cramping.
I went to the loo and wiped and there was what seemed like quite a lot of blood, very red, no clots, quite thin. I was home alone, called a friend and they came and picked me up and took me to A & E. So it must have lasted maybe an hour. Not loads, but lots whenever I wiped. Blood always looks like more than it really is x

I thought that, it always looks like more than it is which I keep telling myself.
I can’t tell if I’m having small cramps or if it’s normal 19 week ligament twinges that I’m panicking about and linking to the bleeding. x

Thank you, I’m really hoping I can say the same for my little one too! I forgot how anxiety inducing pregnancy is 😣 x

I had bleeding nearly every two weeks with DD2 until 32 weeks.

Totally unexplained, would be a fair bit for a day, I'd toddle off to triage have a swab and a speculum, be kept in overnight and then head home completely not reassured 🤣

It stopped at 32 weeks and I was never offered an explanation.

DD2 is 4 months old and snoozing on me now.

It's terrifying but bleeding is remarkably common I've discovered.

I used to keep saying "I'm pregnancy until I'm not" to get through the anxiety.

Oh wow! Did that start right at the beginning?
What an anxious time for you 🙈 I’ll be a wobbly wreck if this it for the rest of the pregnancy, in and out of triage.
The nurses were absolutely lovely but a lot of “we’re not sure” for my liking 😢 x

Yep. Started at 8 weeks.

I hovered between being a wreck (the first few times) and being very casual about it. Depending on the colour I think. If it was red I panicked, if pink I kinda shrugged it off.

I never got an explanation. I had an infection at 28ish weeks and had antibiotics for that and then the bleeding mostly stopped so maybe it was that (but I'd been swabbed a lot before then and it never picked up).

Mostly, they just don't know.

Potatomashed · 19/02/2025 19:49

I had a couple of episodes of unexplained bleeding though pregnancy. They did a scan the first time which couldn’t find a cause. Baby was born at 41 weeks at home as planned 💕

Lillygolightly · 19/02/2025 20:17

I had a lot of bleeding in my last pregnancy which was twins and bleeding can be common in pregnancy and then even more so with twins.

First find it happened it was a huge gush, like my waters had gone or if I had wet myself. Bright red blood that was thin and watery, I was terrified as it hadn’t ever happened in previous pregnancies. I had to wait 3 very anxious days for a scan, scan showed 2 healthy heartbeats and no reason for the bleeding could be seen. I bled for around 10 days. I then had other episodes of bleeding and again no reason could be seen. I think there were 2 possibilities, and unseen SCH or probably more likely something called cervical ectropion which is where the cervix can bleed due to the extra blood flow and hormones etc.

The first time like you I really wasn’t sure if I was having cramps or just the typical ligament pain, but the subsequent bleeds I didn’t have any cramping. My twins were born at 37w by planned c section and I have never been so relieved in all my life.

It’s a very anxious time not knowing what is going on and worrying about the worst. My best advice is to rest and to drink plenty of water and try as best as you can to relax which will be hard I know.

Wishing you all the very best for your scan tomorrow. Xx

TheThreeMiracles · 20/02/2025 18:28

I hope your scan went well today xx

xRobin · 20/02/2025 19:09

So we had our scan today, and baby is absolutely fine!
We were so shocked!
All of baby’s organs and everything were fine, she was super active, placenta was fine, cervix was fine and was a good 2cm away from the placenta… they’ve got no idea what caused the bleed!
She was measuring ahead about 1 week.
I can’t believe it!
Thank you to you all for commenting and your much needed reassurance ❤️ x
