Fever in first trimester is terrifying me

Hi everyone,

I'm worrying myself silly here. I am absolutely full of cold at 9 weeks pregnant. I've been feeling woozy, my nose is so bunged up and I've had the aches and the cold chills.

This evening I noticed I felt hot whilst sitting on the sofa in a blanket and took my temperature and it was at 40.5!!! But I moved the blanket and it immediately went down to 39.6. Then I took my cardigan off and went to a cooler room and it went down to 37.2. For most of the night it's sat around 38.2.

I called the midwife and she sort of laughed it off and brushed me off cause I said I was worried because I'd read it can cause neural tube defects and heart conditions which was both reassuring but also not. She told me to take paracetamol and make sure to drink enough water which I am doing.

Now I'm in bed shivering because I feel cold even though my forehead temperature is still apparently too hot. My husband cuddled me earlier and said I felt cold to him, he also used the thermometer and came out at consistent 36.6. When I tried my chest/stomach that came out at 37.0 and 36.6.

Should I be worried? Should I book a doctor appointment tomorrow even though I've spoken to the midwife? I'm just so worried I've caused my baby some kind of birth defect all because I've got a cold and I've been feeling really poorly. It's making me feel so miserable.

Have any of you ladies had horrible colds/fevers in the first trimester and come out of the other side with healthy babies?

I would see if you are better tomorrow but it does say online to see your doctor if it’s been more than a day or two. I think that’s just to check for more serious infections. You can take paracetamol to control the temperature. Hope you feel better soon x

Thank you! I think I'll call the doctor tomorrow morning. It's so silly cause I still feel so cold and shivery now, not hot in the slightest!

Baby's neural tubs is already fully developed. Try not to worry

It sounds like the only time you had a temperature was when you were wrapped in multiple layers of blankets and cardigans and that it’s been fine since. I wouldnt worry personally, just rest, eat well and have lots of fluids.

I do remember also reading that fever can be dangerous in first trimester so YANBU to be worried. Saying that, I'm sure I had it and baby was fine. It's one of those things that can be but doesn't have to be so as long as you're doing things to keep fever down then you're doing all the right things. Take paracetamol and keep it down x

I had a nasty virus earlier in this pregnancy with a temp of 41+ at its worst and both the doctor and midwife were clear it’s only an uncontrollable fever that’s a worry i.e. one that doesn’t come down with paracetamol. Hope you’re feeling better soon x

I had an awful flu like virus in my first trimester. It was literally the most ill I've ever been. Now have a perfectly healthy 18 month old. One thing to be aware of, is when I had a routine blood test afterwards my platelets were raised and they wanted to monitor it. This was just because I'd been ill through and absolutely nothing to worry about as they dropped back down to normal levels by themselves.
Take care of yourself and don't feel guilty.

I had coronavirus when I was 10 weeks pregnant, I was very very unwell, fever over 40, I thought for sure baby wouldn't survive, but he is a happy and totally healthy 14 month old now

I've had viral illnesses with high fevers in all my pregnancies and none of my babies have birth defects.

Think about it OP, most people will have one or more viral illnesses over winter months in particular and fever is a common symptom of those. It's even more common in pregnancy as the immune system isn't so strong as usual.

Hope you feel better soon, take paracetamol as per the instructions as needed.
