Dermoid cyst during pregnancy

Does anyone have experience of having a Dermoid cyst during a pregnancy? I was told last year I had a “complex” left ovarian cyst and had multiple scans etc. they said it I likely a Dermoid cyst which do not go away on their own. I’m currently 10 weeks pregnant and had an early scan due to left sided pain. The cyst is pretty much the same size at around 2cm.

Has anyone had a Dermoid during pregnancy and did it grow? Did you have to have it removed? Did you have extra scans etc? Did it cause you discomfort?

Any advice would be much appreciated as I am a huge worrier and it is causing a constant discomfort, not necessarily an excruciating pain but I notice it all the time and it’s like a throbbing pain which does round to my back :(

I did. It was about 8cm. It didn’t do anything, just existed. I had it removed about two years postpartum because apparently at that size they can sometimes twist and become painful.

Oh really. Did they manage to keep your ovary? I don’t know why mine causes me so much discomfort when it’s only about 2cm! 😞

I had a 5cm one removed 3 years post partum and even then the doctor said it was my choice to have it out. I’m also a worrier and thought I could feel discomfort so preferred to have it out. The ovary is fine and I recovered quickly from the op (keyhole).

Yes currently 22 weeks pregnant and have a 2-3 cm one. I asked if it had gotten bigger at the 20 week scan but they can’t see it anymore, my ovaries are hidden by my uterus. Sonographer said they usually recommend waiting til after you have had all the kids you want to have before removing it.

I have dermoid cysts on both ovaries and had a baby 6 weeks ago.

They were 2x3cm pre-pregnancy and was told they have grown to 6cm during pregnancy (at my 20 week scan). I was sent for some extra scans by my consultant but then I was transferred to another consultant several weeks later who then had the opposite approach and wasn't concerned with them.

I ended up having an emergency c-section and asked the doctor to check my ovaries if she could as they could remove them there and then. She said they were no bigger than 2-3cm and as I'd lost a fair amount of blood they didn't want to put me a risk of further blood loss by removing them.

Dermoid cysts can grow in pregnancy (mine obviously didn't, not sure what they measured at my 20 week scan). They don't usually intervene unless they are bigger than 5cm or cause pain. My consultant advised me to have an ultrasound 3 months post partum to double check their size and they would decide if they need removing then.

Hello, yes I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant and have a 5cm dermoid cyst. I was given an extra scan with a consultant around 12 weeks but they said as it was there prior to pregnancy it was okay to leave well alone unless it became problematic. I would say around 14/15 weeks I felt some pressure near where I would assume the cyst was but after that nothing at all and have forgotten about it for the majority of the pregnancy
