40+ year old. Will blood results by default be bad news?

Hi all,
posted this initially on antenatal board but no responses.

41 & first pregnancy
had my EDD scan yesterday. Measurements all good and NT scan 1.50mm

now waiting to get blood results back. However will my bloods come back as high risk (by default) due to my age?

im a little confused as reading online it seems that if you’re 35+ no matter what you seem to get bad results from your bloods because of the age factor.

sorry if I’m being stupid! Thank you 💓

Hello,
I wasn’t high risk when I had my baby at 41 - I was expecting to be but came back ok. So definitely not default but obviously a higher chance.

BigGapMum · 15/02/2025 12:11

At 42, when I got my results back they were equivalent to an average 27 year old. Everyone is different.

Age is a risk factor so this is calculated in, yes but it doesn't mean automatically high results.

I wanted total peace of mind as I was 39 so I paid for NIPT (also because my 'dating' scan would have been around 13 weeks and if I needed to make decisions I wanted to be able to make them as early as possible).

No it won't be high risk by default. I was 37 at the time of my EDD scan. My blood results came back with 2 figures, my age-related risk and my individual risk based on actual testing - individual came back as lowest possible risk regardless of age. Good luck, it's a stressful time but try not to worry, the odds are on your side.

Thank you so much everyone for clarifying and giving your own perspective and experiences.
really interesting responses. That helps me understand everything so much better.

Im hoping no phone calls from the doctor in the next few days 🙏
they said they will call by Wednesday if there are any issues. It’s a stressful time and horrible being in limbo x

Do you use an online programme or app in your area, like badgernotes or mypregnancynotes? I only ask because my results were uploaded online platform very quickly. I had to be re-tested due to an admin error, but I had my re-test done at 5pm on a Wednesday and they were visible online by the Friday afternoon (the postal letter didn't arrive for a week though).

They will adjust it. Based purely off age, yes, you will be considered high risk of having DS. They adjust with the NT measurements and give you adjusted risks. I’m 35, my initial risk is 1 in 365. Adjusted is 1 in 6000. HTH

Hi,

No I don’t and hospital don’t mention it. Wonder if I need to ask them to put me on the system. I use my chart and routine bloods were put on there yesterday and all normal.
they just said I’d get a call or if ok a letter x

Hi all,

for anyone reading this in the future with the same major anxiety I received my letter through the post, four working days after my bloods were taken.

i am 41 and they came back at very low risk.
1/5000 for all tests.

it has been such an anxious time. I am relieved and I hope this helps someone in the future x
