Hi,
I'm just wanting to get some opinions on my experience and if anyone else has gone through it before. Basically I had my 20 week scan last week and due to the baby being stuck in pelvis with legs closed the potty shot was not shown, I was however told there are 3 lines so it's a girl. Today I had a re-scan and to no surprise same thing happened, everything seemed fuzzy and the sonographer said can't get a clear view as legs are closed but I think it's a girl too. I don't know why but I'm still not convinced. Have any of you encountered this before? Has it turned out to be the assumed gender or not? Thank you. BTW I've attached pictures from today's scan not sure if they're helpful;L

Hi Op! I worked in an obstetric ultrasound clinic for a number of years. It's completely normal for baby not to be in an optimal position to see their sex. Take into consideration that ultrasound uses sound waves to create the image so it will never be perfectly clear like a photograph, things like bowel gases, body habitus/fat or muscle density and baby's position will all affect the image quality. The 20 week anomaly scan is about the development/health/growth of baby rather than to determine the sex so the sonogs will have done what they can in the time frame allowed for the appointment. It's an added bonus if sex is visible at the time. I'd suggest booking a private scan to see if baby is in a better position to see their sex if you're concerned

It's really common to not be able to see due to baby's position etc. Was the rescan reassuring for all of the important measurements they couldn't get last time regarding baby's anatomy? I hope it was. You're probably just going to have to wait and see re gender unless you want to pay for a private scan. But that's by far the least important part of your anatomy scan so hope the rest of it went well.

You’ll know for sure when the Babs is born

Why is it important to know what sex the baby is?
I take it all the medical checks were completed in the appointment?

Yes the rescan was definitely reassuring in terms of the measurements. I'm relieved it's a healthy baby. I had a lot of issues with my last pregnancy just about survived pre-eclampsia and pre-term labour. Yes I was thinking ill wait till the growth scan at 28 weeks and if it happens again I can book a private scan. Thank you.

Hi @Fizzymomlife there are no pictures

I think they've been deleted, maybe because there was some personal information on them.

My friend had this. No clear view on any scan just a guess from various sonographers that it was 'probably' a girl - she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

I wouldn't take it as a definite unless there was a really clear view between the legs on a scan. Is a private scan an option for you?

Possibly, if you go on your images you can crop it before sending and maybe try that but I think from what you have described we might not be able to offer much insight

That made me feel a bit better. Honestly speaking I don't know if I'm in just in denial and really hoping for a boy because I already have a girl but like you said it has happened before that when the scan isn't clear, birth is given to the opposite gender lol. Fingers crossed. I'll see how the 28 week scan goes and if it still isn't clear, then I guess private it is. Thanks x
