Vitamin B6 dangerous during pregnancy??

Just looking for advice/reassurance as I cannot find any definitive answers online.

I'm nearly 5 weeks pregnant with my second baby. With my first baby I suffered terribly with nausea/gagging/sometimes vomiting; it was constant from about 5 weeks-16 weeks and made life pretty miserable.

This time around I am desperate to avoid it. I did a bit of research and saw that vitamin B6 can help, so thought i'd give it a go.

I've started taking one 100mg tablet once a day for the last 6 days so it'll be in my system for when the nausea kicks in (it hasn't yet).

Tbh, I feel amazing right now and feel that it has given me extra energy. However, I know that in high levels it can cause toxicity with some seriously adverse side effects (muscle paralysis, tingling, numbness, skin lesions) which I obviously don't want and I definitely don't want to harm the baby.

I'm thinking of cutting down to 50mg daily instead and seeing how I get on. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience to contribute on this? Is 100mg once a day a ridiculous amount? TIA

I take the basic Pregnacare (specifically designed for pregnancy, NHS recommended), and it has 10mg vitamin B6 which is 714% of NRV/what you need. I'd cut back and see a GP to get advice re: vitamins. 👍🏼

*advice re: sickness meds, not vitamins! There are a few your GP can try that are safe for pregnancy

Thank you for your reply. I think you're right- probably best to cut back/just speak to GP for anti-sickness tablets, if I need them :)

@Overthinkingotter No problem 😊 Hope everything goes smoothly for you! Fwiw they prescribed me cyclizine for nausea and it made me sooooo drowsy, so be prepared to go back if you need to.

Thank you :) oh no- extra drowsiness is not what you need! Did cyclizine help with the nausea at all?

I'm on Xonvea which is b6 and an antihistamine combined. It does make me drowsy but does massively help with the sickness so I'll put up with the sleepiness! It contains 10mg b6 per tablet - I take two in the evening and one in the morning

@Overthinkingotter A bit, but there were days when I took it and threw up ten mins later. So, in the end, I had to be strategic about taking it (quiet days in work when it didn't matter if I was half asleep or very sick). My GP was a bit funny about letting me have anything else because I couldn't prove I was taking the cyclizine twice a day every day, so I made do. But I know lots of people have had success with Xenovea (sp.?) - my GP was just reluctant to give me anything else. 😬

Thank you, that’s really helpful! I’ve decided to take 25mg a day of B6 for now and see how I get on. Hoping the vitamin alone might take the edge off but we’ll see…
