What does movement feel like?

I’m 15 weeks which I know is super early but this is my first pregnancy so I have no idea what I’m looking out for. This morning I had a “feeling” a bit hard to describe but almost like an occasional pang or twinge not painful but not totally comfortable either. I can say categorically it was not flutters which I’ve heard about. It was on the left side and lasted an hour or so? Any thoughts? Like I say I know it’s super early but I just wondered what this could be?

I'm a ftm (20 weeks) and started to feel something about 18 weeks.

For me, it started off as a kind of swishing feeling - like if you tried to splash one hand under water? It's changed a bit since and feels like very strong muscle twitches. A bit like when one eye is tired and twitches. Doesn't feel like fluttering for me!

For ages I wasn't 100% convinced it was baby, but I felt them kick in my scan yesterday and watched it on the screen.

(Small caveat that I have an anterior placenta, so maybe it feels different depending on where your placenta is?)

I will say that I got a lot of uncomfortable (but not painful) twinges in different spots around 12-17 weeks and I don't think they were baby kicking. I asked midwife and she suggested round ligament pain (which I'm starting to feel is a catch-all!).

I didn't feel anything until about 22/23 weeks in my first pregnancy.
Second time it was about 20 weeks.

Both times the initial movements would have been quite easy to dismiss or put down to something like gas bubbles. They were faint and inconsistent, like a tiny little flutter.

They very gradually get stronger and more regular until they are completely unmistakable. Those early movements it's very common to go long periods without feeling anything but you should see a pattern emerging between 24 and 28 weeks.

I felt first movements at 15 weeks with my baby boy and it was unmistakable. I'll never forget laying there in bed and feeling him boot me for the first time. It felt like someone flicking my insides with a rubber band.

Starts off like a flutter, like if you went over a bump in a car, ends like an alien trying to escape from the inside through your belly.

BreezySqueazy · 06/02/2025 12:31

It’s unmistakeable really. For me it felt different to when you get gas or something. It felt like something moving inside me like a gentle flicking sensation or like something was flipping over inside me. As my first pregnancy progressed I used to feel her legs sliding along my belly and what I assume was hick-ups or the heart because I would feel a rhythmic ticking sensation. My second pregnancy was a fidget and was very active and kicked so hard it was painful!

thanks all. I think on reflection it is round ligament pain. It’s come back again over the course of the morning and I’ve got mild back cramps too. It’s just so weird because it’s definitely not a “regular” feeling but hey I guess that’s pregnancy for you! Still sometimes find it hard to believe it’s real!!

That sounds like ligament pain as everything stretchs out.

For me, movement feels like bubbles going through my digestive system.

Teapotters · 06/02/2025 13:28

For me it has always felt like wind, or similar to stomach churning but noticeably in the wrong place to be that. I'm 28 weeks now and think I first felt it around 20 weeks, although was never confident.
Now the kicks are strong enough to bounce my arms if I've crossed them over my tummy!

gettingolderbutcooler · 06/02/2025 13:31

Like there was a small bird inside slightly fluttering its wings.

heroinechic · 06/02/2025 19:05

Mine starts with what feels like involuntary muscle twitches. In my first pregnancy I noticed around 18 weeks. In my second I felt movement as early as 13/14 weeks but it was really low down and then became less noticeable as baby moved up (I have an anterior placenta in this pregnancy).

With both DH has been able to feel on the outside from 21 weeks x

Readysetgooo · 08/02/2025 05:55

For me it was like small bubbles rising inside, I didn't get the fluttery feeling. I was sat in the theatre so not moving too much when I first felt it, can't remember when it was but didn't have much of a bump so probably by about 20 weeks. Currently 15 weeks with number 2 but not felt anything yet that I'm aware of so waiting patiently.

PurBal · 08/02/2025 07:15

Bubbles is a really good description. It might be baby moment. I found that once it became obvious I'd look back and think "hang on I've been feeling this for weeks".

First time Mam here, I just had my DD last September. The only way I could describe it at first was like the occasional wind/farty bubble in my tummy 😅 it also only happened at first if I was very still like lying in the bath. At first you don't know if it is just a fart! But then you'll feel a proper nudge and trust me you'll know ☺️ I loved feeling her move let me know she was doing okay in there! Actually missed it once she was born.
