Currently 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant (I think). October 2023 I was treated for a ectopic pregnancy in my right tube with methotrexate. Since the ectopic I’ve had twinges on that side often and can pinpoint ovulation by the pain on that side. I also started bleeding at 5 weeks with the ectopic pregnancy. I’m experiencing an increasing amount of twinges on that side now (I wouldn’t say painful, more uncomfortable) but enough to make me worry it’s happening again. Which brings me to my question, has anyone else been treated with methotrexate and gone on to get pregnant again and have pains on the ectopic side and everything go on to be okay with the pregnancy? Thank you for reading.

Hey, as long as your pregnancy is fine (according to regular scans/check ups which I'm sure you're receiving), I wouldn't worry about the twinges. They are very normal. You've endured a big change in your body and it will take time to heal. I had a cyst rupture when I was pregnant with my girl and did have a lot of pain, but in the end everything was fine. Prior to getting pregnant with her, I also had an ectopic pregnancy which was terminated itself. I didn't need an injection or surgery thankfully. It's quite normal to overthink and worry but as long as you're having regular checks you'll be fine. X

Thank you for your reply and sorry to hear you also suffered a ectopic. I’ve got my first scan next Thursday with epu and hopefully pregnancy will be confirmed to be in the right place and I will stop worrying. I’m seeing it as a good sign I haven’t started bleeding as I had by this stage last time. I’m just worried the pains on the right side are indicative of another ectopic x

I haven't had an ectopic but with both of my pregnancies I had pains ranging from twinge to really quite sharp around this time in those areas. So it could easily be totally normal.

Ladybug320 · 06/05/2025 19:22

@Readytotryagain how has your pain been since? Did your scan go well? I’ve had a natural pregnancy which was a total shock after years of infertility and medicated cycles. My last medicated cycle ended up ectopic and it was traumatic. Thankfully it self resolved but I kept my tube and I’m worried about scarring. I’ve now got constant pain in the ectopic side and I’m scared it’s ectopic. The pain radiates into my back just like last time too, I’m so terrified. EPU won’t see me until next week as I’m only just 4 weeks today (found out 9dpo! 😭)

PopThatBench · 06/05/2025 19:24

Good luck with your scan OP 💛

Jadeypie · 07/05/2025 12:48

Hi i had a ectopic and was treated with the injection. I'm currently 5+2 days. Epu had me in soon as I found out to do bloods every two days which showed my levels rose the way they should. Then I had my scan on Monday which showed little bean right where it should be. I totally get the panic i was the same. I've had a lot of twinges, stabbing pains and period like cramps (never bad enough for painkiller or for long periods of time) moving to new position helps.

But I'm proof after a ectopic you will have a healthy pregnancy I hope that's some reassurance xxx

Ladybug320 · 07/05/2025 15:51

@Jadeypie thank you and congratulations!

the pain I’m experiencing is like a constant dull ache/burning pain in one side. It’s probably about a 4 in terms of pain level (1 being not painful and 10 being extreme pain) but there’s been a few times it’s reached a 7. Paracetamol doesn’t even touch it either. I went back to EPU today because my anxiety was high and I’ve had a bit of rectal pain too. They’ve taken more bloods. I just don’t feel like this feels right. It feels just like my ectopic a few months back :(

Readytotryagain · 07/05/2025 16:07

Hi. Unfortunately it ended up being another ectopic, it ruptured and I had my tube removed. Other tube was investigated during the op and all looked healthy so I’m still optimistic il conceive again one day. @Ladybug320 the main thing I read whilst scouring the internet when I was experiencing this is that so many women experience the same thing and go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies. Best of luck x

@Ladybug320 I'm glad the epu are seeing to you. How many weeks are you? I must say tho I've had some strange pains this time and even rectal ones too the difference with this pregnancy and the ectopic one is no spotting and no back pain i remember the back pain was horrendous even walking made it worse!

But you know your body best if anything changes make sure you ring them straight away! Sending hugs 🫠 i get how anxious you must feel xx

GivingUpFinally · 07/05/2025 17:25

After 2 ectopics and several mcs I had a natural conception eventually. I had to have scans from 6 weeks to check placement.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

They didn't remove my tube even though I had 2 ectopics on the same aide and a suspected rupture as both seemed to self resolve. I firmly believe that if they had taken the tube the first time at auspected rupture I wouldn't have had the second. I did often get twinges on the right side during ovulation and that continued for around 7 years post ectopic but has since resolved since natural pregnancy.

Ladybug320 · 08/05/2025 16:09

@Readytotryagain oh I’m so sorry it’s another ectopic. That is devastating. Hopefully now the problem tube is removed you will go on to have a successful pregnancy. Did your HCG rise normally with this pregnancy? The only thing keeping me hopeful is my test lines are progressing well this time and I’m not spotting/bleeding.

@Jadeypie I do have quite bad back pain but it’s on and off. The pain in my side is pretty much constant but I’ve also had some lower pelvic pain centrqlly too today. Honestly it feels exactly the same ans the ectopic and I’m really concerned. I just hope it’s inflammation because the ectopic was only a few months ago. HCG at 10dpo was 25.4, EPU wouldn’t see me again for a week but managed to get in yesterday and have more blood drawn at 15dpo. My HCG came in at 513 (4weeks 1 day) it was 102 at 18dpo with my ectopic. I’m hoping that there was no fluctuations in between the two betas this week! Having another tomorrow and hopefully a scan next week. Only difference this time is better line progression and no bleeding.

Jadeypie · 08/05/2025 16:21

@Ladybug320 i got my betas done started off at 59, 160, 508 and so on i got scanned 4 ×5 and seen everything was in place then 2 days later they scanned me again and it had grown loads and yoke sac was visible so they have discharged me now till my 12 weeks scan. My line progression was great and same as you no bleeding. I know the pains are worrying and obviously it's scary thinking if it could be a ectopic but you've got good signs. I will add I had some big pains on my right side which triggered me but just turns out that's where I ovulated from. Tomorrow's beta will give your more of a clue. But if your still really worried and don't want to wait another week for a scan push them tell them you don't feel right and you need checking now instead of later xx

Readytotryagain · 08/05/2025 17:02

Yeah my betas double and even tripled a few times after 48 hours, I had a private scan and 3 internal scans at EPU before the pregnancy was located. By that time my betas were over 10,000 x

@Readytotryagain I’m so sad to hear this. Especially as your HCG was rising normally. I was getting some hope from the fact mine have risen well so far but I know it’s not an indicator things are healthy.

@Jadeypie im glad you’ve been discharged back into normal care now. I’m really losing hope with how much pain I’m in, I might see if they will scan me on Tuesday instead of Friday. I’ll only be 5 weeks exactly but I’m too stressed with how I’m currently feeling.

Jadeypie · 09/05/2025 04:49

@Ladybug320 awww i really feel for you!!! I can tell how stressed you feel. Ring them and ask them. Ssy your paims too serve to wait around. i was 5 weeks exactly with my second scan and they could see. I know they don't like scanning before 6 week but if your hcg levels are high enough and your presenting bad pain they should just get you in xx

Ladybug320 · 18/05/2025 21:03

@Jadeypie thank you. My HCG went from 513 to 1298, 48 hours apart and had a scan Wednesday last week, which showed a sac in my uterus. It was such a relief I cried when the sonographer turned the screen. I got started on progesterone suppositories Friday (rectally), but started spotting today. Like a brown/orange tinge in my discharge. I’m really concerned now that the happy news was short lived and I’m going to lose another baby 💔 have tried to stay hopeful but it’s so hard after loss

Jadeypie · 19/05/2025 06:36

@Ladybug320 that's lovely news it brings so much relief doesn't it? But then somthing els pops up to cause worry! I know someone who's spotted on progesterone, sounds like old stuff or have you had sex recently? Sorry bit intrusive! Just that the cervix can be irritated easily which causes spotting also. I havnt dtd with my partner for this very reason because I know spotting is so triggering xx

Jadeypie · 19/05/2025 06:40

@Ladybug320 after a loss, pregnancy is never the same. Just keep reminding yourself this is a new pregnancy. You are pregnant right now today,

Do you have any symptoms? I've found mine remind me that I'm 100% pregnant. Xx

Ladybug320 · 19/05/2025 11:22

I had nausea this morning and my sense of smell is heightened. Also have food aversions. Nothing tastes nice! I have sore boobs too!

I haven’t had sex since conception (poor OH) I intentionally avoided sex and decided to do progesterone rectally to try to avoid it causing spotting as I knew it would make me spiral. I have been constipated though and found myself straining a lot so I’m hoping I’ve just irritated my cervix and popped a blood vessel. The spotting was a little more red mixed in with brown when I first went to the toilet this morning but it’s now back to light brown mixed with CM. It is every time I use the bathroom bur not going in my underwear.

i called EPU this morning and they’ve pretty much said to sit tight and monitor at home. i do have a scan scheduled with them on Wednesday to check the pregnancy is progressing so I’m hoping the spotting goes by then or at least doesn’t get any worse! There’s always something and I just want a healthy, unproblematic pregnancy that’s boring and stress free. If this doesn’t work it out will be my 3rd loss in 11 months. I used to worry about not being able to get pregnant (3 years of infertility), now I worry about staying pregnant 💔
