I don’t know how far along I am…

I’ve had a rotten chest infection since December and my period this month was next to nothing. Turns out this was probably spotting as my periods are usually horrifically heavy. I had put this down to the chest infection but chose to test and this is how the test looked…

This is my third pregnancy (last one was 4 years ago) and looking back at tests I’d done with them the positive line was so much lighter after the first missed period.

The doctor has suggested I’m 6 weeks as I had a December period (although questioning the heaviness now!). I’ve also felt very sick the last 2 weeks. I’m on anti sickness tablets already.

I guess what I’m asking is, does this look like a test of someone who’s just missed one period? Not sure if it’s a daft question. My partner said to buy a clear blue weeks test and I told him not to bother as it’ll obviously say 3+ weeks…just thinking the line is so much heavier than it was with my other two at this stage.

I don’t know how far along I am…

My test line was as dark/darker than the control line by a week or two after my missed period. Potentially the best way to know how far along you are would be a private/early scan if you're able to. Although of course they can be out a bit date wise. Hope it all goes well for you 😊

There's just no way of knowing as the test will only get so dark so could be 5/6 weeks or could be more.

You'll need a scan.

Congratulations

Congratulations on your lovely news!
Im currently expecting baby number 3 and my test this time was a strong positive a few days before my period was due (so was less than 4 weeks pregnant) and my sickness started really early too at around 5/6 weeks so the dr could be right! Are you able to book a private scan (which I think can be done around 6 weeks) just to put your mind at ease and clarify your dates? Best of luck with your pregnancy :)

My line was dark with dts

MovingMad87 · 31/01/2025 06:40

Line darkness doesn't really tell you anything. If you want to find out how far along you are your need to go fora private blood test that will check your HCG and progesterone levels. That will tell you quite accurately how far along you are especially before your 12 week scan. I'm not sure where you are in the country but I'm in London and there are loads of private places you can do this abcs get the results within about 12 hrs.

I was still bf when. I fell pregnant and hadn’t had a period atall. I was also feeling utterly dreadful. It turned out my lft were out of whack and I was having twins, dating dcan done by NHS and I was 9 weeks. Too early for 12 week scans so had to go back.

Superscientist · 31/01/2025 08:00

It's usually 5-6 weeks that my sickness really starts. In my last pregnancy it was 4 and a half week and I was off sick by week 6 and on two antiemetics!
Unfortunately the only way to know now is with a scan

Greeneyegirl · 31/01/2025 08:04

Could it be twins....? I actually didn't think anything about it but I'm currently pregnant with twins and my first test the morning of my missed period was SO dark. 4 days later I had a die stealer. Started feeling very pregnant and sick at 5 weeks.

Have been pregnant on 2 previous occasions and they weren't as dark as the twins. My first pregnancy it took until 6 weeks to get a dye stealer. I think if you were over 6 weeks with a singleton you'd have a dye stealer by now.

A private scan or hcg test will be best guide, I think missing two periods you'd get the hook effect where hcg is too high for the trlest to cope with so the trst line actually fades.

Thanks for all your responses!

struggling a bit in this pregnancy as sickness has been bad, cramping and bizarrely lots of Braxton hicks so I’m not feeling super optimistic… I’ve read bad things.

I should get a private scan really but the £75 is putting me off as I know it’ll be free if I can just wait another few weeks. Have checked a few places. This has gone up in price from the £40 I paid with my first!
