Anaethetist Appointment...?

Hi Everyone!

I'm 27 weeks and just got an appointment through to see an anaethetist at 31 weeks. I am high risk due to a few factors (previous DVT, ectopic pregnancy x 2, Rhesus negative) but as far as I know none of these should mean a planned delivery.

Has anyone else seen an anaesthetist at this stage and what was the reason?

I have to respond to you because I have exactly the same histoy. I have a DVT (discovered at 29 weeks), had 2 ectopics (one in each tube) and I am also Reheses negative. Mine is an IVF baby and I am 37 weeks today. Horray!

Are you taking Clexane?

I haven't seen the anaethetist but there is talk from the thrombosis team about a planned induction. I was told this morning in my appointment that I wouldn't be able to have an epidural unless 12 hours had passed since my last low molecular weight heparin injection should I go into labour before induction. Similarly, I won't be able to have a spinal block and will need a general anaesthetic for a Cesarian unless 12 hours have passed.

I had to meet the anaesthetist when I was pg for the same reason as you (DVTs due to Factor V Leiden). I was injecting with heparin all the way through my pg, so basically the appointment was confirmation of what I already knew - that I wouldn't be allowed an epidural or a spinal block due to the risk of bleeding into the spine. In other words if I had to have a CS, it would be under GA.

Wow, that's spooky that we have a very similar history!

I had a DVT whilst on the pill, but am only on aspirin because all blood clotting factor tests came back negative and it was 5 years ago. I've had 2 ectopics in the same side with only one tube removed 2nd time around so was lucky enough to be able to conceive naturally.

Consultant said I would need to come off the aspirin around week 36 but didn't mention induction.

Thanks for your reply also Gumbo, although I'm not on heparin maybe it's a precuation because of the aspirin - I will need heparin directly after the birth for 2 weeks also so I guess this may affect things? x

It is a bit spooky isn't it.

The reason you can come off asprin I think is because your DVT was discovered some time back. Mine was spotted at 29 weeks and they like to treat for 6 months. They want me to continue with meds for as long as possible. I also have no clotting problem with the blood they think it was caused by the pregnancy.

I am being treated in the Cambridge area.

It's great you've only got one damaged tube. I had one tube removed but the other one is also damaged (even though the ectopic was treated with metatrexate)so the only way I can get pregnant is through IVF. I was lucky that my first cycle was sucessful.
