Hospital Bag - Maternity Pads/Towels Recommendations Please

Can anyone recommend some decent Maternity Pads/towels for the first week after birth ? With my previous 2 I used Kotex night towels but can't find them in the shops now. Thanks, PGFairy x

This isn't based on experience as I will give birth for the first time in 4 weeks but I've trawled the net and forums and people say that if you experience heavy bleeding then a maternity sanitary towel (ultra thin or normal) over the Always Ultra Night pad with wings works a treat. I've bought Boots maternity ultras and Always night-time ultras to take with me to the hospital based on this.

I found last time round Tesco's own brand night time pads worked a treat. Extra thick with wings, and quite comfortable to say I normally hate pads.

I bleed for around 8/9 hours hard after birth, then just bled the normal amount I think thats expected. Only bled so much after birth as I was aneamic and no one told me at the time this would happen....now I know for this time.

As for pads, I brought tesco's own, can find them in baby section of Tesco's. Don't buy expensive ones as your forever changing them anyway, will be buying the same this time.
Another goodie to buy in Matalan or tesco's is cheap granny pants as I went through quite a few of these on the night I had given birth.I think you can get them in packs of 5 or something.

i used Mothercare and Boots maternity pads, i preferred the mothercare ones. i also bought Boots disposable pants which were handy for the first couple of days.

I thought Sainsburys own brand were the best. Seemed thicker than Mothercare (though was wearing 2 at a time to begin with !)

Make sure you use Maternity pads and not plastic backed sanitary towels - see this thread here which might help.

as i said earlier my big city hosp used sanitary pads not maternity

after 5 babies i would never use maternity - rubbish imo

Natracare maternity pads were great, but I think you may have to order them online. Very soft and comfy for those first few days (I found with a tear I definitely wanted the extra padding maternity pads offered over regular sanitary pads).

I have got several different brands to try but I am sure I remember someone on here posting to say that you are best to stick to a maternity pads for the first day because it doesn't have a coating on them so the midwife etc can see the blood you are releasing properly.

I honestly can't remember where I read that or how long ago really.

We were told not to ue anything other than maternity pads so the MW can check the blood coming out of you, the non maternity ones draw the blood into the towel so they can't tell how much is there - apparently very important!

blimey, my MW never asked to see my pad!

in five births no one has ever asked to see the pad (thank heavens!)
