Hi all,

I just got a call this morning regarding my blood tests and I have come back with a 1 in 18 chance of Down syndrome. I'm completely shocked as the chance was very low for my 3 yr old.

Ive seen some people on here saying they have a high HCG hormone but low pap a. I don't think this is what mine is below but I have no idea what the numbers mean tbh. Has anyone been in this boat with similar to the below?

Thanks x

This must be really worrying for you.

Sorry not to have something mroe useful to say, but I don't think PAPP-A is low, the usual cut off is 0.3 or 0.4.
Is there someone you can call to have this explained for you?

Chica1990 · 28/01/2025 20:53

I went to see them today for the NIPT test. I didn't realise I was looking at the figures on the left. For both pap-a and hcg the optimal result is 1. So my results are low pap and high hcg like the others I've seen online.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me

Hi chica, I can understand that this news is really worrying. I have a daughter with DS and I was terrified during pregnancy. She's actually totally wonderful! Of course it's a bit harder work in some ways, but not as bad as I expected.

Chica1990 · 28/01/2025 21:37

@FedUpandEatingChocolate did your results come back very high risk initially and you had it confirmed?

Kids with DS are totally adorable. I worry about how I'd cope, I struggle with my one as it is and I'm sure I still have some PND.

Worrying is know ...... but please remember that you have a 17 out of 18 chance of not having Down's. These are odds that a gambler would be very happy with it.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 29/01/2025 12:42

My odds came back at about 1:120, and then NIPT at 99%.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it, life is sometimes hard, there's more care and parent admin needed. But she's wonderful and worth it.

I had horrendous antenatal depression when pregnant with her, but was under mental health care throughout and then immediately afterwards as well. I was given sertraline to start as soon as I gave birth and plenty of support. More then when I had PND with my eldest.

I'm going to leave this thread now as I don't want you to feel you can't voice concerns. (I had all the concerns!)

Wishing you all the very best whichever way you decide.
