This is my first so it's worrying me SO much. I have a wicked cold right now, came on friday after an appointment. I just woke up struggling to breathe as my chest is so tight and I can't stop coughing. My baby is coming out via ecs Wednesday. Like.. tomorrow. I am so scared of giving her a horrible cold in her first few days here where she'll already be so vulnerable. Just seen horror stories online of babies getting RSV so I'm worried I have that. Even if I don't, surely a common cope is so dangerous for a baby whose just a few hours old. Dad has it too. Is she going to be okay? What can I even do other than sanitise everything and wash my hands before touching her (which doesn't seem feasible in a large labour ward recovering from surgery!?)

I'll discuss with the midwives and nurses of course but please can anyone settle my mind I am really spiralling here that I'm going to make my baby seriously suffer or worse

Hopefully you'll make antibodies in time for them to cross the placenta and help her immunity. If not, breastfeeding would also give some protection. I'm presuming the plan is for you to have a spinal? Because they're unlikely to want to give you a GA with a bad cold on board, unless it was an emergency.

I had a heavy cold when DS1 was born. He was fine, didn’t get it. I must’ve given him antibodies. Also breastfed for maximum benefits.

Try not to worry.

Thank you. I plan to breast feed so hopefully it happens ok and she is loaded up with liquid gold and antibodies etc.

I fear this is a pregnancy symptom no one told me about, waking up in the night and utterly spiraling into anxiety and fear. Before this cold it was how much i had to do and prepare or whether we have enough stuff etc - in the light of day things always looked so much better and I'd laugh at myself for getting in such a tizzy. This feels a bit different though as does feel like there possible danger and harm that could come to my baby. I've had a tough pregnancy, high risk. I'd have liked for her arrival to be the end of the anxiety over her health! Lol

It’s natural to feel anxious. You’ll be doing all your can, our bodies are wonderful at creating antibodies.

Everything feels worse at night, but do try not to worry. If baby does get a cold, chances are it will be mild due to antibodies and you’ll be having all the health care advice and support around you,

Wishing you every happiness.

I had Covid when I had mine via emergency c section. It lasted longer than it should have as I couldn’t cough because of my scar. I slept upright to ease my chest and a pressed a rolled up towel across my scar and curled up as much as possible to brace myself before coughing if I had the chance. It was a pretty bad experience for me but my baby never caught it. Wish you well for your birth.

Great username lol

Ahh. That's my new worry now, the cough I currently have is stitch splitting stuff. Oh god this is going to be rough. But as long as my baby is okay I don't care. I'm wheezing and struggling to even breathe and just keep thinking if a day old BABY had this she'd surely die... sorry if that sounds overdramatic

Hey just wanted to pop on here and say my c section is on Thursday & I’ve came down with a cold yesterday! So f*cking annoyed and worried! Lucky I’m not coughing but throat is on fire and head pounding. I hope by Thursday it’ll die down! 😢
currently wanted to do much more preparing/cleaning around the house these couple of days but don’t have energy for that now!
Hope you are feeling better and the c section goes well!! Xx

maria2bela1 · 28/01/2025 19:44

Don't worry, remember baby is literally inside of you while you have a cold, you will build antibodies and baby will get lots of immunity if you breastfeed

maslinpan · 28/01/2025 19:44

I had a hideous cold I couldn't shift for the last fortnight of my pregnancy, half way through giving birth I realized it had completely cleared up. The immune system kicked in as something more important was going on.

Blue2020 · 28/01/2025 20:02

DH had a horrible cold on day one of DS being born (at 35 weeks gestation by emcs). DS caught the cold on day 3 and had it for two weeks. He was ok, struggled to breathe a bit at times but mostly ok. The nurses were not worried.

BabyFever246 · 28/01/2025 20:06

I caught something fucking awful on the postnatal ward after my EMCS. Day after I got home I was ill. I slept propped up and cuddled a pillow to my wound to cough/sneeze etc. Baby didn't get it somehow but I was breastfeeding.

Edit to add you can't take decongestants when breastfeeding. Paracetamol and ibuprofen only, which is what you'll have after c section anyway.
