What size babygrows

Appreciate babies are different sizes but what sizes did people take to the hospital when they had their babies.

I'm booked in for a c-section in 2 weeks time. Baby currentlycirca 3.1kg/around 7lbs.

Looking at size guides wondering whether to just go for upto 3 months as otherwise run the risk of never using upto 1 month. But I then worry what if they're too big.

I took 0-3 months and they were huge, DD didn't fit in them until she was about 3 months old! Had to get my MIL to go out and buy some newborn baby grows to bring to hospital.

Personally I would buy a couple of packs of newborn onesies and vests that fit up to 7lb (some newborn fit up to 9lb and are much bigger) and then once you know how big baby is you can see if you need more.

I'd get some cheap small ones (newborn or up to 1 month) just in case. You don't need many, and can always pass them on or pop them on Vinted if they're too small!

Thanks ladies! my daughter was 24 weeks and 1lb so I never had this problem with her - i just went through allll the sizes!

Deffo a few fist size baby gros 0-3 was huge at birth

MixedBananas · 26/01/2025 15:48

DS 1 was 6pbs and lived in first size and newborn for a good 4-5 weeks and then moved to 1 month until 7/8 weeks and 0-3 at 2 months - 4 months old.

DS2 was projected at being 7lbs 90z but was 8lbs 3oz anr lld went straight into 0-3 for the first 6 weeks then 3-6 from 7 weeks until 4 months. Then 6 - 9 from 4 - 6 months and is currently at 6months of age qearing 9 - 12 months.
Point being some children barely use each size and quickly progress while others live in each size for a longer period.
Regardless, with both I took a couple of each size, newborn, first size and up to 1 month (9/10lbs).

I would take one 0-3 month in hospital bag, but a few up to 1 month. DD1 skipped newborn and went straight into up to 1 month, which she was in for maybe 2 weeks max.
This time around I won’t bother with any newborn, I’ll get a handful of up to 1 month size for the early days but 0-3 happens very quickly. If baby is small and is in up to 1 month for longer than DD1 was then I will go and buy some then. Honestly broke my heart having to pack away beautiful newborn outfits I’d bought her that she never even got into.

I'd take the growth scan with a pinch of salt and take a few different sized clothes.

I had a scan 4 days before DD1 was born and was told she would be 7.5lbs, she came out under 6lbs and very skinny so my mum had to rush out for tiny baby clothes and size 0 nappies!

The gorgeous 'coming home' outfit i'd carefully picked didn't fit until she was 3 months old

I used both newborn and up to 1 month for soo long. She was 7lb 4 at birth

remaininghopeful23 · 26/01/2025 19:48

If I were to have another I'd get up to 1 month for the early weeks, and not get any newborn at all. Newborn is up to about 7.5 pounds depending on the brand, and my DS came out exactly that so they didn't fit for long at all. 0-3 would've been way too big for him. Got decent use out of up to 1 month sizes.

Remember as well it's not just weight alone - it also makes a difference if baby is more chunky round the middle or very long etc. You could have 2 babies the same weight but in different sized clothing.

A lot of times it's the length they grow out of first so you could get babygros without the feet to wear with socks instead to get longer use out of them

RabbitsEatPancakes · 26/01/2025 19:50

0-3 months are huge! Remember newborn babies are all scrunched up and they generally lose weight the first week too. I'd take newborn and a 0-1month if you're worried.

justusandthecat · 26/01/2025 19:55

We took 0-1 month which was fine for our first who was 6lb4. Youngest was 6lb7 and we had to go and buy tiny baby for him even though he was heavier because he was so scrawny.

skkyelark · 27/01/2025 11:59

Another saying take a variety, but don't buy too many newborn/first size until they're here and you know their size and shape. My two were both around 9 lbs born, but still somehow needed newborn for the first few weeks.

Superscientist · 27/01/2025 13:06

My daughter was 6lb13 at birth and in Asda first size (6-9lb) until 8 weeks and Sainsbury's <1 month (up to 10lb) until 10 weeks. I'd recommend both for high 6lb-8lb baby, for 8lb+ I'd skip the Asda first size. If less than 6.5lb you would probably want tiny baby from one for the other companies they usually go up to 7lb but the first size would get you through the first day until someone could pop to the shops for you
My daughter was then in 0-3 months until 5 months and at 4 is in 2-3y clothes as she's short like me. A decent weight but she dropped from the 25th to 1st percentile for length/height so she's always been slow to out grow clothes

Nellyelephanty · 27/01/2025 15:09

0-3 were huge for baby at hospital.

we wore newborn for 10-14 days.

then 1 month until about 5-6 weeks. Then 0-3 months until 4 months old.

DC1 was 7”2
DC2 was 6”2
