I’ve been feeling terrible for a few weeks now . Mainly so exhausted and tired ( normal I guess in early pregnancy) but also I’m so thirsty like drinking 6 litres a day and up all night drinking . My mouth is like a desert . I’ve had awful thrush for weeks which I can’t get rid of either . I’m only 8 weeks but just wondering if anyone had this early on and it got picked up or is it too early for symptoms? I had GD with my last pregnancy and wasn’t found out until 37 weeks ! Pretty sure I had it will of three previous pregnancy too as always had glucose . Can they test this early ? I just feel like I was to stay in bed and drink water for a week 😭

Typically GD develops at around 24 weeks, that’s when they should do the test but definitely share your concerns with a midwife. 8 weeks though exhaustion and the water could just be typical pregnancy symptoms, worth keeping an eye on.

I’d book an appointment with your GP ASAP. you’re at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes after having GD previously. When was your last HBA1C check? Hope you get on okay

Gestational diabetes is usually detected around 24-26 weeks because that’s when the routine testing is done. That’s not to say it can’t develop much earlier in women who have had it before.

Guidance states that women with previous gestational diabetes should have a HBA1C taken with their booking bloods and a GTT by around 12 weeks gestation.

Have you had a booking appointment yet @Eighteight?

I never had a test after my last baby 🫣 I really should have just never got round to it but I’ve been suffering with terrible recurrence of thrush for a couple years and they said it’s a symptom. I know I need to go back

No I havnt yet . I need another scan next week as when I went a couple weeks ago only an empty sac was seen so I’m waiting to find out if anything has progressed otherwise there isn’t much point 🫣 havnt had any tests after my last baby either as I’ve been rubbish with following it up ! The diabetic team did say that when I got pregnant in the future I would need to get tested asap so I’ll see what comes after next week

Lots of women are diagnosed before 24 weeks, particularly if they’ve had GDM in a previous pregnancy. Speak to your community midwife who can arrange for earlier testing.

If the pregnancy is viable you should get a HBA1C at booking, if it’s sadly not I would suggest getting your GP to do it as you are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes and it could well be non pregnancy related.

I had all of this at the same stage. I just couldn't quench the thirst no matter how much I drank and the exhaustion was on another level - also second pregnancy and didn't feel like this with my first.

I've had my GD test at 28 weeks and I'm the top end of normal so keeping an eye but most of those first trimester symptoms have calmed down now

TomatoSandwiches · 25/01/2025 20:54

I was diagnosed GD in my first pregnancy not in my second and third but in my last pregnancy I was diagnosed with DT2 with a HbA1c of 101 at 7 weeks, I lost a good chunk of weight and developed thrush for the first time in my life, GP took bloods when I went in for the thrush.
I would see your GP immediately.

Definitely go get it checked, if it is type 2 you will need to get that under control as soon as. If it isn’t, definitely go for your yearly hba1c in the future, it’s so important. Hope you get on okay :)
