6 Week Scan empty gestational sac

I had a private viability scan yesterday at 6+2 weeks, when we had the scan it didn’t show anything only an empty gestational sac. I have to go back in 2 weeks to see what happens.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this? With my first baby, we needed a lot of fertility treatment to get him so I was having regular scans and at 6 weeks we could see the heartbeat and everthing going as it should.

Im trying not to get too worried as I have heard sometimes nothing shows as it’s early but I am also worried as I don’t really have any pregnancy symptoms.

Is there a chance your dates could be a few days out? This would be normal up to 6 weeks so even 2 or 3 days difference would mean there's nothing much to see.

My first scan I would have been 8+2 going by LMP but I actually only measured 6+1 due to long and irregular cycles. I'm now 31 weeks.

Your dates may just be behind.

At 6 weeks I measured slightly behind but they could see the fetal pole.

Im glad to hear your pregnancy is going well ☺️ I think my dates are correct, however my cycle is longer than average due to PCOS so not sure if that would make a difference? My cycle is anywhere from 30 days to about 35 instead of the average 28

Yes, that would make a difference if your dates are based only on LMP.
Were you physically tracking ovulation?

I have had another look at the ultrasound photos and report and it is showing a yolk sac but no embryo

Was it a transvaginal scan?

If you ovulated on the 23rd Dec you should be about 6+2. I think it should show on on a scan by then (but private places can vary in quality), a fetal pole but whether the heartbeat would definitely show by then I don’t know. The accuracy could make a difference. Contact your epu and hopefully they will offer a scan.

At 6 wks it’s common not to see much if you had abdominal scan. More likely to see the fetal pole with a TV scan. You will see much more at 8 wks.
I was lucky with DS, the sonographer knew me so suggested a TV scan and immediately found the fetal pole. She hadn’t been able to see it on the abdominal scan.
That fetal pole is now 20.

I did have abdominal and transvaginal and could only see yolk sac the sonographer said it’s looking to me more like 5 and a half weeks instead of 6+2 I have put a photo of ultrasound.

I had a TV scan in EPU at 6 weeks and my sac was empty, no fetal pole visible. Follow up scan at 8+1 showed a little fetus with a heartbeat, still 4 days behind though. Dates completely caught up by 12 weeks.

The 6 week ish mark is so early and it's easy for dates to be out slightly by a day or two as the measurements are so miniscule.

Looks like it’s heading in the right direction. When you go back you’ll be able to see so much progression.

I went for a scan at expected 6 weeks following bleeding and there was a sac but nothing else. They told me to expect the worst and sent me away to return in two weeks; it was the longest wait. I had given up all hope when the next scan showed a heartbeat which belonged to my now 12 year old. Wishing you all the best OP!

I had exactly this. EPAU gave me early scan for prev losses/ectopic and found sac with yolk but no embryo. Sonographer pretty positive just said you might have your dates ahead. Nurse I spoke to after told me it's probably not vialaby, here's your appointment for 2 weeks time!!
Couldn't hack the wait so went for a private transvaginal a week later and saw the baby, good heartbeat 150bpm and dated me 6+1.
