Teachers? When did you return to work from maternity leave?

Trying to find an answer but not much is shared about this!

If I return to work on the 24th of February, will I get my full salary in March pay? We get paid at the end of the month. I’m guessing I would as I’ve resumed my normal contract/working hours.
I know that some people go back before holidays so that they get paid for them etc.

Thank you

When is your Feb Ht? I'd have taken a KIT on the Friday, ended my maternity leave on the Monday and got paid for that. Every teacher I know does the same.

In your case you'll be paid from 24th Feb to 31st March in your March pay.

I agree. End it at half term so you get paid full pay for half term.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 23/01/2025 19:26

Is that the Monday after half term? I’d officially return on Monday 17th - it isn’t your fault you can’t teach because school is closed! Lots of people get to tag on annual leave to maternity leave, this is the nearest us teachers can get!

Yes you will get full pay in March.

I returned from both of my maternity leaves on the last day before summer hols.

Thanks everyone.
I think it might be a little late to change my return date? I’ve only ever signed something to say that I’m having a year off, never had to write a day that I will return. Not sure if that is normal? I did go off work really early because of pelvis issues so may have missed some info. I literally just emailed my Ht and asked what my return date was.

Regarding pay, I’ve actually emailed my union and they said that it depends if I get paid in arrears or in advance and I need to ask HR. I’ve emailed HR but not heard anything back.
How common is it for us to be paid in arrears? Thinking back to when I started 7 years ago, I got paid the first month I worked in September so surely we don’t get paid in arrears?

I get paid on the 22nd. 3 weeks in arrears and one week in advance. I think that’s pretty standard. If you started a new job, you’d get paid at the end of September.

APW24 · 23/01/2025 23:49

@DrFosterWentToGloucester23 Do you mind explaining what is exactly meant by paid in arrears?
If you’re paid on the 22nd, does this mean that you are paid 3 weeks in arrears and 1 in advance the weeks leading up to payday or does this mean that you are paid in arrears for the previous month? For example, March wage is actually based on February.

Basically, I got paid yesterday (22nd) for the 1st - 31st of the month (January). Meaning 3 weeks in arrears - I had to work three weeks before I was paid anything this month - and 9 days in advance. So, if I quit my job on the spot tomorrow morning and walk out, I’d need to pay back 8 days wages as I have been advanced that money on the assumption I complete the month!

APW24 · 24/01/2025 00:07

@DrFosterWentToGloucester23 Thank you for explaining - it makes sense now.
My pay day is the 26th of March, so if my wage is based on arrears, that would mean that I will have worked this and get paid if returning on the 24th of Feb?

I would expect that you would get paid for the 24th Feb to 31st March in your March pay packet. You will likely have missed the payroll deadline (usually mid-month) for getting paid anything at the end of February.

APW24 · 24/01/2025 07:18

@DrFosterWentToGloucester23 Thank you for the help. It seems that the union has just confused me more saying that it depends if I get paid in arrears as if I get paid in arrears I would still be paid in March.
I’m only so worried about what I get paid in March because I’m returning to work 18 weeks pregnant and this is one of my qualifying months for SMP. I’ve had many sleepless nights worried about it all so thanks again.
