I just found out I am pregnant at the weekend. I have irregular periods and a history of miscarriages. Anyway I thought I might be 6 weeks but had a scan and measured by 5w 2day. We say a gestational sac measuring 7.15mm and saw a yolk sac but no fetal pole or heart beat. Anyway I had some spotting the past few days every light and only when wiping. Now I am freaking out. Could I be miscarrying again.. I have had intermittent cramping but no bleeding and the size of the sac is freaking me out.. is it too big?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Of course you’re worried about miscarrying, it is very early days and you’ve had awful experiences of it going wrong before.

I’m sure the baby is tiny for a heart beat yet?

Be gentle with yourself - try to distract yourself and put it out of your mind for now.

Im sure someone will come along and tell you something more comforting, my only comparable experience is that I slipped downstairs when I was 10 weeks pregnant with dc1 and I was terrified for weeks that I’d lose the baby.

It is such an anxious time, when you want the pregnancy so very, very much. But the very best thing you can do is care for yourself, stay calm, don’t dwell on it.

Even if you were six weeks there's a good chance you wouldn't see a heart beat, and it sounds like you could easily be out with your dates. It's possible you're miscarrying, but also very possible everything is fine. Annoyingly you just have to wait and see for now. All the best x

Thank you everyone! I know it’s just a waiting game isn’t.. thanks for all your replies

Hi OP, first of all take a deep breath.

At this moment in time you are 5+2 pregnant and at that stage there wouldn't be anything else to see than the gestational sac and yolk sac (with fetal pole appearing as you approach 6 weeks).
It's normally between 6 and 7 weeks before you can see an embryo and heartbeat.

The fact you are measuring behind isn't unusual at all with irregular periods unless you know exactly when you ovulated either with tracking or ivf for example. My cycles were all over the place and my first scan I would have been 8+2 from LMP dates but I only measured 6+1 - i'm now 31 weeks pregnant.

The LMP dates are a guide only and based on a very average 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14, they're not accurate for a lot of women.

Lastly, with the spotting, many women get spotting in early pregnancy and go on to have a very healthy baby. As you know, the time to worry is if it gets heavier, if it's bright red blood and if you start getting painful cramps.

I'm so sorry you've experienced MC before and it's totally understandable that you'd be on high alert this time but the only thing that can give you any answers now is time. Best of luck to you.

I hope this is your 🌈

@BubblePug1985 what was your outcome? I hope all is well! I had a scan with gs measuring closer to 5 weeks with a yolk sac but no fetal pole, only I’m sure of my dates because I tracked ovulation and have been doing this for years (because of infertility and medicated cycles). So I already feel like I’m heading towards my 3rd miscarriage. I really hope you have a happy story to tell!

BubblePug1985 · 27/05/2025 06:10

So I went back a week late and I was measuring 6 weeks and I just got my dates wrong. I am currently 24 weeks so fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you x
