Worried fetal weight?

I might just be worrying unnecessarily but I went for a scan today, I’m 18 weeks 3 days and noticed on the report after my appointment that the baby only weighs approx 125g which seems tiny. The doctor said everything looked well and healthy in the appointment so I’m a bit confused why nothing was mentioned?

The average foetus at 18 weeks weighs approx 200g so I wouldn't be concerned at this stage. Baby might just be smaller than average- they all grow at different rates too. Some start of small and then have a rapid growth spurt, some are consistent on their centile. If the sonographer wasn't concerned then I wouldn't be- at this stage if the heartbeat was strong and placenta working well then no concerns. Have you got other concerns about your baby or was it seeing this on your report which has made you worried?

Are you or your partner small? Genetics can play a part in this also.

I really wouldn’t worry though, as scans are not an exact science. They can be quite out in my own personal experience.

@Nursemumma92 thanks for your reply. No other concerns with this pregnancy, baby girl has a strong regular heartbeat :)

@404ErrorCode I’m 5’8 and dad is just under 6’ so we definitely aren’t short. Perhaps just waiting for a growth spurt soon 🤞🏻

They can't accurately tell the weight of the baby anyway.

In that case, even more reason not to worry. Best wishes with the rest of your pregnancy ❤️

Means absolutely nothing at this gestation. If you had risk factors and they were wanting growth scans those wouldn't start until the last trimester as you can't tell anything about the baby's size until then. Even then it's an estimate at best. If the sonographer saw something concerning they absolutely would say. You should try to get out of the habit of trying to interpret scans as it won't help you.

@Happydays2025 Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately my last pregnancy ended in TFMR due to a diagnosis of T18 and other issues so it sometimes easier said than done to not try and interpret scans but I understand what you mean.

I'm so sorry, that's heartbreaking.
We had 5mc between babies so I do understand the anxiety and wanting to know all is OK.
Trust me I googled everything after every scan. Ultimately it sent me down a rabbit hole every time and I had to put parental controls on my phone-and remove mumsnet!!
