Hi all,

So I have had a shocked pregnancy but very happy!

After much research over the years I was led to believe sperm can only survive 5 days MAX.

I track my LH/bbt daily religiously. My partner and I had sex just once a whole 7 days before I ovulated just once. We Had sex on the Sunday, I had LH surge on the following Friday and got peak on the following Saturday.

Shockingly I have got pregnant and early scan confirms it was from this one time.

As his ‘sperm’ would have waited for 7 days for the egg, im really worried about the pregnancy staying after reading that sperm quality goes down after a few days.

has anyone else been in the situation before and had successful pregnancy?

im also 35.

thanks all!

My apologies that’s 6 days not 7! My brain clearly isn’t braining from the surprise! 🤣

I Think you are worrying unnecessarily. It’s possible you didn’t ovulate when you think you did?

I would have thought the main issue with this would be a short LH phase but my understanding is that potentially prevents implantation which is obviously not the case here.

Thank you. Yes I do worry a lot.

I definitely ovulated on the following Saturday as that was the only day my ovulation strips showed the darkest line and I have a app which showed as peak, also that day was the only day I had ovulation pains.

Its a surprise as we did think I was on my ‘safe day’ but I’m happy, just still in shock I guess!

How far along are you now?

I suppose for most people the sperm is around for up to 5 days before, however that’s not to say it can’t hang around for 6/7 days it’s just a very reduced chance. I think I read somewhere that sperm go into a bit of hibernation after a while plus it would be in the fallopian tube waiting so maybe the conditions helped.

Also you could have ovulated later on that Friday and still had the lh in your system by the Saturday? Eg egg released shortly after the surge occured. So it could be 5 days. Either way congratulations.

Ovulation tests, temperatures and even early scans are not reliable to the hour/day. There's loads of normal variability.

Natural family planning (which is basically what you were doing in reverse) is pretty good but not anything like perfect.

The early growth of the embryo is largely predictable which allows for dating but there are small variabilties, plus ultrasound measurements are approximate when everything is so small.

Please try not to worry about this.

But HCG causes the ovulation strips to darken, and thise ovulation pains were more likely implantation cramps

Isn't it much more likely you ovulated around the time you had sex, and a week later the cramps and positive OPK are caused by the pregnancy?
