Measuring 6w6d but no fetal pole

Hi,

Went for an early scan today. Going from LMP I should be 6w1d so unfortunately we only saw the gestational sac and no baby. However the gestational sac was measuring 6w6d. Is this normal for there to be no baby at this point? Any similar success stories would be lovely to hear

Hello! It's only considered a non viable pregnancy when the gestational sac is 25mm MSD with no fetal pole (measurement should be on your report). A sac measuring 25mm is 7w 2d so it could still grow in a few days if you're measuring 6w 6d. The fetal pole and gestational sac grows 1mm a day! Did they book you in for a re-scan?

Did you have a yolk sac? That's a good sign if so and could just have a slow growing fetal pole, but they do catch up.

Thank you for your reply it’s really helped my nerves!
My gestational sac measured 18.09mm, they didn’t book me in for a rescan just advised a rescan in 2 weeks time (at an extra cost) but I think I’ll just ring my EPU and explain the situation. I did have a yolk sac, that’s really good to know

Most private scan places will do a free rescan in 2 weeks if they don't see what they need to see. I would query this x

Hi, we did but they said it would be the same cost (£80) which is a shame considering we only found out it had implanted in the right place. We didn’t find out whether it was viable or how many babies. I suppose I should’ve waited a little longer before going for an early scan x

Contact your epu, or your gp if your epu don’t take direct referrals.

I had a private scan (although I was 9+0 and only measuring 6+2 with no heartbeat) so I knew there was no hope with mine. I contacted gp who referred me to the epu.

Sorry to hear that. Do you think it would be best to ring them on Monday or wait a week?

I would call them on Monday if it was me. Explain it to them and then let them tell you no or to ask you in. With mine even though I was certain they wouldn’t take my word for my dates and wanted to scan me again two weeks after that.

This happened in 2022, I have since had my son and I’m pregnant again.

Okay I’m hoping they will rescan me just for peace of mind otherwise I’ll be going crazy.

Congratulations that’s lovely news!

I don't think it sounds good to be honest OP. I would contact your EPU as pp said. I wouldn't go for another private scan as you'll need to be linked in with the NHS for management if it is sadly not viable. Thinking of you.

Hi, I’m now 29 weeks pregnant with a healthy little girl. I went for a private scan at the hospital and the growth was a bit off so was only measuring less than 6 weeks. I just went for my scan far too early.
