Tetanus risk from rose thorn

Hi
I’m currently in my first trimester and really anxious about this. I just poked myself with a rose thorn from a rose that I bought in a bunch from a grocery store. It bled a bit. I ran it under water and washed it right away. My concern is tetanus risk? I had my childhood vaccines but my booster was just under 10 years ago (10 years end of this year). Anyone know if I need to get a tetanus shot? Anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

It doesn't sound like there's any risk at all https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/tetanus/

You may want to have a chat with your midwife about anxiety though, and I'm not saying that to be sarky honestly. Pregnancy can bring on anxiety and/or depression and it's much more common than tetanus.

Tetanus

Find out about tetanus, including how you get it, what the symptoms are, when to get medical help, how it’s treated and the tetanus vaccination.

Thank you, I appreciate the recommendation. I have just been extremely worried as it’s my first one. I got told it was too early to see the midwife and I think it’s been a bit difficult to navigate care tbh. Really appreciate the support and recommendation.

Best piece of advice I ever received regarding pregnancy was to

STEP AWAY FROM GOOGLE

honestly, it's going to be an extremely long and stressful 9 months otherwise.

Honestly having such a hard time tbh. I can’t seem to focus on anything else but extremes of what might happen to the baby.

If you're going to have the whooping cough vaccine, it often is a combined shot with diphtheria and tetanus.

Hi OP, is there anything specific you are worrying about or is it just in general?
It's totally normal to feel anxious and worried to some degree, especially in early pregnancy, but if you are finding it overwhelming and taking over your rational thoughts then you should talk to someone about ways to manage the anxiety.

Don’t want to scare you OP, but I do remember one of my neighbours when I was a kid dying from tetanus after being pricked by a rose brush. Have you checked with 111?

CraftyZebra · 16/01/2025 21:39

They said to probably check with the GP. But they scared me a bit tonight to be honest as they’re like you need to wait to ring them.

I am working with a few people to manage the anxiety. I think the problem is a lot of it is rooted in some level of realness if that’s the right thing to say.

It’s a low risk wound and you’re in date anyway if less than 10 years since your last one.

You don’t need a booster.

Thank you. 😭
